  1. Regarding the dirtiness of oil shale/oil sands, I think it could be reduced with nuclear power to generate steam/heat to help with extraction and also refining. If one so wishes, nuclear can be semi-portable and generate steam with low costs and no emissions (you don't need a turbine).

  2.  @Simple_But_Expensive  I didn't know there's stranded natgas where Canada is extracting oil shale/sands. If so I guess that's cheaper. But the micro reactors I'm thinking of are truck-deliverable, sealed, autonomous, ~25 years of fuel life. Look up e.g. "Mitsubishi Heavy aims to build 'reactor-on-a-truck' by 2030s".
