But he softballed Putin in the sense that he gave him many leading questions that he hoped would make Putin provide cause for a US/Western audience to distrust its own leadership more. Hilariously Putin was so badly prepared that he rarely took the cues.

Meanwhile, Europe has clearly demilitarized. How would Ukraine being part of NATO constitute a serious threat to Russian national security? 2. President Putin, the post-WW2 rules based international order has reduced war deaths and conflicts a lot, and in that internationally agreed order, countries can't change borders by threat or by force. Now you opt to return to an order where the worlds' empires grab land to expand. How will that improve the world? 3. President Putin, most of the world understands the n-tzi nonsense that Russia is telling us about Ukraine is not matching the reality of Ukrainian governance. Have you become fooled by your own disinformation campaigns into believing that the Ukrainian government is actually n-tzi, and what has been your own personal role in developing them? 4. President Putin, thousands die or are maimed every day in the war, millions are displaced, cities have been reduced to rubble. Can you explain to me how the war will be of net benefit to the world, or even a net benefit to ethnic Russians? 5. President Putin, how come the Ukrainians preferred to orient toward Western democracies rather than toward your Russian oligarch/FSB rule? Why isn't Russia the shining city on a hill that neighbors would like to ally with?

  8. He seems to be broadly in favor of democracy, freedom and prosperity, and thus in favor of western geopolitical strength and stamina.

  9. Putin has a rosy picture of the history of the Russian Empire and he thinks it deserves to be great again at the expense of all others, and that he's the guy to do it. He wants to be a great tsar in the history books. He also thinks NATO is a big hindrance on that path, so he wants to make NATO collapse. Thus he attacked Ukraine in order to make it a vassal state again, like Belarus, and in order to challenge NATO cohesion. And when the time is appropriate, e.g. during a Trump presidency, he' grab some territory in e.g. Estonia while rattling nuclear weapons in the hope that NATO's article 5 will not be adhered to, so that NATO collapses. Wars in general are almost always mistakes and fail to reach the hoped-for objectives. NATO desperately tried to negotiate with Putin before the 2022 invasion, but Putin had made up its mind years ago.

  11. The problem is that the elites and neocons are on democracy's side, so if you're on democracy's side, it looks like you're in the same tribe as the elites and neocons. And if you're on the side of the "oppressed" and the dictators and opposed to the elites' and the neocons' geopolitics while living in a democracy, then you're engaging in the luxury of virtue signalling against your own interests.
