  7.  @arandomnamegoeshere  Say there's a use after free error in the ICH9 driver affecting kernels newer than 5.6 to pull an example out of the air. What will you do with that knowledge in the absence of a kernel patch? There's nothing you can do to prevent processes running on the system from accessing that driver that would allow you to continue to use the machine the kernel is running on. It's literally keep on running and hope that you don't pick up anything that exploits that bug or power the machine down until the kernel patch comes out.

  8. My system names my ethernet device as 'enp3s0' rather than 'eth0' so I looked a little further, thought about it and came up with this little pipeline to pull out the ethernet IP address: $ ip -4 -br addr| awk -F" *|/" '/^e/{print $3}' It's short, uses lightweight tools and produces the goods.

  9. That first story sounds very much like "I started feeding my cat a special diet and now it craps out Bitcoin." While fundamentally everything is subject to quantum behaviour, the nature of off-the-shelf computing hardware does not lend itself to even emulating what a dedicated quantum computer does. I'm not panicking just yet.
