When I bought my current car, I bought it new and the salesman smiled broadly and asked me how I'd like to finance that. I said "I'm paying cash." His face fell so fast. He would be missing out on a big chunk of finance commission. That was 12 years ago. If I ever need another car (I'm 63) I'll pay cash for that too, but I'll probably buy used.

I liked the lighting, but I'm old and my eyes don't enjoy bright computer screens. I thought the subdued light in the background was kinda classy too. Well done considering you were feeling less than at your best. Get better soon.

I think for many people a hidden cost of buying groceries is simply the waste factor; stuff sitting in the fridge turning to mush than then needs to be thrown out. As a single person I cannot buy fresh produce in the quantities that generate savings so I make sure to buy only the amount that I will actually use. Nicole demonstrated a really good hack there by making her pasta sauce kit and freezing it. If you have a decent sized freezer this is a great thing to do enabling you to buy in quantities that generate savings without the storage waste.

My ex never ever thanked me for birthday/xmas gifts and generally seemed to avoid using them. Except for a pair of high quality sunglasses. She never thanked me for them but they never left her face when she was out of the house. I chalked that up as a win.

I love self checkouts as I only buy small amounts at any one time - I'm weird, I know. I always make a point of thanking the staff member in attendance as I leave, whether or not I've had to call on them to sort out some weird behaviour of the system. I'm sure that that is one of the highest pressure jobs in the store.

Your response to those who told you to get rid of your little dog - that they haven't experienced love ... and FUCK YOU! - yeah baby!! My last two dogs lived so long with expensive medical conditions but it was totally worth it because they gave back so much more. I still miss them though one died in 2008 and the other in 2019. So many happy memories. I hope your little boy keeps on keeping on for many years to come.

I've always been interested in tech. I taught myself to program for MS DOS in the late 1980's and early 1990's and have continued learning about tech stuff ever since. However, I don't own a single smart device, other than my phone if you can call that smart. A moment's thought about what benefit I would get from a 'smart' door bell vs the cost of losing more control of my personal data as it feeds everything to "the cloud" and home base let alone the dollar cost vs expected life just convince me that going to the door and saying "hello" is not a big imposition.

The next shitty thing being done to us is making things that we used to buy outright and pay for one time a "subscription". Want your car to work? Pay a monthly subscription so the accelerator continues to work, or the entertainment system, or the seat warming, or the air conditioning.
