  1. The fact that Windows introduced PowerShell and more and more stuff is done in PowerShell shoots down the argument against Linux's terminal use. Neither Windows nor Linux are dependent on the terminal, however you can achieve a lot of things in the terminal that are either impossible or really clumsy in a GUI. The reason that so many things too do with Linux involve breaking out the terminal is that mostly people are trying to do something special; something involved and complicated. Also, the terminal is a lingua franca across many distributions of Linux. Not all commands are the same but you get the gist of how it is done and can work it out from there yourself in many cases.
