It's a pity that it wasn't based on the Holden Commodore model before that one. They kind of stuffed the styling with that version. The earlier one looked like it really meant business, particularly from the rear which is a view that most Aussie road users had to get used to. Vroooom!!! Missus: Oi, what was that? Mister: An SS Commodore. Missus: Oh, right. Mister: <under breath> bastard. And she made me buy the Hyundai. </under breath> Missus: What did you say? Mister: Nothing ... dear.

Re: Your surprise at the manual saying "SS Sedan" - in Australia, they also made the SS ute, like a pick-up based on a family sedan. The SS Ute goes like - as we say down under - a shower of sh*t, and that's a REALLY GOOD thing. We even race the things! Also the SS embroidery doesn't cover a Holden emblem and the door sill, well we don't put names on there 'cause the door's only open long enough to get in and get that fire-breathing monster started up.

One thing the Aussie muscle cars have that the American's don't seem to have is an ability to take corners; and to rip up straights. Our muscle cars are the basis for our premier motor racing class - the V8 super cars. Or they were until the American company directors killed off Australian manufacture.
