  2. Well you can say "American" in any country in the world and everyone thinks the USA so I think we'll stick with calling ourselves American

  3.  @shmutube  American English has a larger vocabulary than most languages, this is able to be used with a specificity that others can't. Maybe your handle on it is the sloppy part.
