I was a cop - generally you talk in a playful way to little kids that are around that kind of chaos so that they associate the uniform with safety/kindness instead of just associating the uniform to whatever evil is going on around them at the time - plus kids say all kinds of things and talking to them as a friend can easily lead to them blurting out something important. Plus kids are just so innocent and anything I could do to put them at ease was always worth while because so many of them are just born without a single chance at a normal life because of their family’s criminal behavior.
