@pietermaaan Being a cop in America - i did that job for many years and I guess I can see how you might wonder that because of how the media portrays gun violence in this country - yeah, we all have guns, usually more than one, but I carried one every day on my hip and was fairly confident I could use mine better than the thug that might try to get me - fortunately I never had to find out - but considering the nationwide insurrections that are going on right now and the Leftist leaders that are ordering cops to stop defending law abiding citizens and their property I have never been more glad to be in America where I know I can protect myself and family with accurate, efficient lethal force if I need to. The slight increase in risk from everyone possibly being armed is worth the freedom I have to own guns and protect myself how I see fit and not have to hide in the corner and wait for cops that will almost always be too late. I came across plenty of criminals with guns over the years, some got really close to being deadly situations, but like most cops I avoided it at all cost, sometimes putting myself at great risk of getting shot, and was able to get out without having to go through shooting someone or being shot. I had partners that weren't so lucky, both shooting someone and getting shot. But everyone having guns isn't even on the top 10 list of things that make being a cop in America a difficult job.
Also - about being individualistic - it's one of the founding ideas of this country. A society can't make good decisions without being comprised of individuals that make good decisions. When individual responsibility and freedom is protected above everything else then there is maximal freedom for everyone and maximal opportunity for everyone. The popular thing today is to break everyone down into their groups, race, sex, gender, whatever and then assume everyone in that group is the same and wants the same things - but that couldn't be further from the truth. Humans are individuals and to not recognize that inherent fact and protect it is to the detriment of everyone.
