  3.  @TheMabes69 you are EXACTLY RIGHT! Do it SMART, research places that don’t want your firstborn as payment. When I entered an ADN program in Dallas, the USA was in the midst of a nursing shortage, crisis level. They were importing Brit nurses on contract. My tuition per semester for the nursing courses was 50.00, yes FIFTY dollars. I still have one of my tuition receipts. They were that desperate for nurses. There is no frickin way I’d EVER pay what they’re asking now; is it 50k, or is that figure outdated? Insanity!! Don’t do it!! Explore other avenues if you really want to be an RN.

  6. I agree. Was in the game for 40yrs, graduated in 82. The caliber of patient has done a 180 shift since then. Not only are they abusive, but thanks to the internet, many think they know your job and what you are supposed to do for them, not to mention lots of them are emotionally unstable, to put it politely. I was a bedside nurse, and I loved the hell out of it, but the acuity level is so high, and so many people are admitted to the hospital in very sick condition. It’s a burnout profession. Nurses are angels who walk among us. We enter the profession for the right reasons, but it’s a rude awakening. I pray for all of you, doctors too. They work the crap outta NP’s and PA’s as well. The only way I would do it over is to become a nurse anesthetist. God bless you all♥️

  7. You are exactly right. Don’t settle for the first area of nursing that presents itself. Management will encourage you to enter MedSurg, don’t do it! It’s a good way to gain bedside experience, but many times nurses end up getting stuck and never advancing. Burnout is very common in that area.

  11.  @orchider143 nurses take terrible care of themselves, generally speaking. I remember the days. Caring for the sick, 12hr shifts, how you gonna have time or energy for yourself OR family?? My son basically raised himself😢. That guilt has never left me. But he understood, and we are super close. Cherish your family, as you only have ONE♥️

  12. Many boomers, myself included, are nurses but they are retiring. It’s the timing. There may not be nurses to take care of boomers!

  19. You must ferret out the ones who aren’t toxic, aren’t racist and stick with them. There will be those types in ANY profession or work setting. God bless and grant you strength and courage. I pray for nurses all the time♥️. I love you all, even the nasty ones! A Former Nurse

  20. You can find areas of nursing that don’t lead to burnout. Take your time and research it! I took the first area that wanted me, then I pigeonholed myself. Mistake.

  24.  @cinta3805 back in the late 70’s early 80’s, I worked at Parkland Memorial Hospital. They brought a boatload of nurses from the UK on contract. After that contract expired, more were brought from the Philippines. Golden memories😃

  26.  @sherrelllouis5546 just remember, if you choose a field of nursing where you don’t utilize your skills, you are NO LONGER marketable in the high paying areas, and that’s a fact! Unless you go into an administrative position, and those are hard to snag. Need a masters degree, then you might as well teach.

  28.  @laurensmith7986 as an agency nurse, you can EASY pull that, but the price you pay is high. High acuity, high patient assignment, new admits, unfamiliar facility and protocols, etc. if you can work OT, the sky’s the limit😜
