  3. i once dated a peruvian girl who, although a wonderful person (we're still pals) was always misusing english, my pet peeve was instead of theoretically she always said theorically, amazing the amount of conversations she could slip that word into.

  6.  @RobWords  my mum loved bad puns, i still have, fifty years later, "the scharnhorst doesn't look so gneisenau " rattling around in my head. i left school at 16 in 1970.

  7.  @RobWords  like i say my mum gave me a deep respect for use and misuse of english, and i've loved they way it's begged borrowed and stolen from so many other languages, and even today i pick up a word that makes me think - gosh, that's another word i never gave a second thought to, and i look it up. when i left school i stole three books, a bible (i still haven't finished colouring it in) my physics book (it has peeled off skin [from sun burn] between the pages on reflection and refraction of light), and chambers etymological dictionary. i think i got all the egg corns right, just to boast a bit i'm one of those people who listens.

  8. wasn't buck naked derived from shooting deer? you got a dollar for a deer skin (hence shooting a buck) but you skinned it and got paid - buck naked - or you came home empty handed - buck naked. butt is logical, but i think buck came first.

  11. 13:35 yep, a squib was what you used to ignite a gun or cannon, hence not really wanting yer squib to be damp. and deserves, deserts derives from deserves - old english but still. i'm a bit of a grammar n@zi i have to say. i think it's a lazy mind that doesn't notice that some words and phrases are peculiar enough that you ought to look them up and see where they came from and what they really mean. psychology and english are two really useful subjects to have, i like to boast that i got every job i interviewed for between 1975 and 2015 when i retired - charm and a command of english. i used to date a peruvian girl, whose family lived in spain and france, she was sort of fluent in english, spanish, french, probably belgian, and german and whatever they speak in peru, but consequently she got her words mixed up, i was just saying a favourite mistake of hers was to say "theorically" instead of theoretically, but one day driving around the normandy beaches of france i asked her "what does mange tout translate to?", cos to me it seems like "eat everybody" or "eat everything" and she said "oh, i though that was english"
