  1. i tell my friends that i have been spoiled, for the last ten years i've had good luck, but only enough good luck to maintain my status quo, when i lived at home i was a temp worker, i had numerous and various jobs, some dead end, some that contributed to my CV, but when i moved to london i could do no wrong, i landed my first job, which i got made redundant from within a month or so, but that led to a design job that lasted seven years, in which time i went to three art schools, when i got made redundant from the design job i got a place at university, mainly due to encouragement from my first girlfriend, but while i was studying design at uni i got swallowed up by the computer graphics industry (1984) and that was mainly down to being recommended by one of the countries leading designers. i worked for most of the top london computer graphics houses, got sent abroad on various projects, made enough money for my (ex)wife and i to get on the property ladder that meant i could reitire early. i like to boast that between 1974 and 2005 i got every job i was interviewed for. i out that down to a) knowing people in the industry b) being charming c) being lucky - i have very few illusions about my skills, in some ways i'm a genius (my producer would come to me with a problem that got my head scratching, but i always found a way to make things work) and on the other hand i'm a talented bullshitter, i can discuss stuff and make out i know what i'm talking about when i know full well i don't have a clue. when i hit 55 was the first time i applied for a post and was turned down, so i tell myself it's an age thing, but i rarely discount luck as a factor, and blaming @bad luck@ is comforting, isn't it. my thanks to all the women in my life, they have been the main inspiration and driving force behind everything i do - i'm a show off.
