  7. i've watched this a couple of times and i cite it often, it is ineed a tidy way to avoid infinity is cosmology, but it just occurred to me - where does all the mass in the universe go? and at the start of the next aeon, where does the heat come from if there is no mass? i love this aeons idea, and that photons experience no time and therefore no distance and that means however "big" the univesre might be, to a photon it has neither size nor time, but it just struck me, where does the mass go? when "stuff" gets swallowed by black holes they increase in mass, if they are evaporating have they turned mass into photons? have to go google, back in a mo (lol).

  16. well, at 70 and finally decided i'm not cut out for any kind of relationship, not even with friends, i think it's no surprise i agree most (i agree a little with the others) but mot with yasmin. she's right about not being able to talk to each other, all my relationships have been with strong independent, smart women (they dump me) but the reason they couldn't resist me is my sense of humour and my ability to listen as much as i talk. what has gone wrong with the world is too many people believed thatcher and reagan - being poor was never going to make anyone rich, and now two people cannot afford a house even on two salaries, we were tricked by reaganomics.

  18. er, if you vote the candidate you wanted to vote for, you didn't have free will to choose someone else, did you. how did he miss that? that's the problem with free will, can you do other than you feel compelled to. if you're atheist, decide to be christian for a while, and vice versa, you can't. as far as i can tell there is only one past, you did what you did and it's set in stone, surely that is the future too, you can only experience one future. the only thing is you can't see what will happen.

  23. surely if you time travel all you do is create a new universe. if you go back to kill your grandfather then you're going back to a past where you don't exist (yet) anyway, and in the universe you come from you no longer exist there anyway. the universe you travelled from carries on as normal but the universe you go to is another - not the "original". anyway, that's my muddled brain for you.

  24. i think there is just one past history, until we get hold of a time machine. that kind of implies there will be one future - zillions of options, but only one way they will play out. which to me implies that you can join "the history of the universe" at any given point and you'll have a fixed past and a fixed future. sure you can have a goal to aim for, shall i go to class or shall i skip it, but the outcome, when it happens, will be the only possible outcome. besides, you do things for reasons, which means you won't do other things, you pick A and now you could not pick B. i don't see how we are free to do anything, we are only ignorant of the future. and if you did know the future, the moment of your passing, and all the events that lead up to it, what would you do? you kinda have no choice but to carry on - or - what? what else could you do?

  31. first question, how can "mainly hydrogen atoms" be a fireball? since when has hydrogen burned on it's own, surely even if you "singularise" atoms of hydrogen they don't just explode. second, don't some theories say the universe started "everywhere at once", i thought the singularity thing had been dropped? although there are problems with it, i think penrose's aeons theory is most elegant, since photons have no "concept of time or size" the end of the universe and the beginning of the universe have no "size" and no "time", and it will always be the "first big bang".

  35.  @kjustkses  if the universe was fine tuned by god, that kinda means god came after the physics and god is bound by physics, which makes god lame. as far as nature is concerned all the numbers in "fine tuning" are "1" nature couldn't care less how they relate to each other. the concensus is using fine tuning to prove god is bollocks.

  38. i just came from him talking (it wasn't anywhere near a debate, WLC tended to cede to penrose superior knowledge) talking to william lane craig, and i said as much in comments, we all have this massive super computer behind our eyes and it's such a pity only two handsful of people on the planet can use them. penrose is a great ambassador for agnosticism, and atheism, in his own, quiet, logical, knowledgeable way, he tore WLC apart, my favourite line (paraphrasing) "well there might be a superior intelligence, but i don't see where that gets us".

  49. i for get which book, but i remember seeing one of escher's illustrations when i was quite young, it's appealing to think penrose found inspiration for maths and science as i did, i just wish i had his capability. i didn't realise ryan reynolds was so interested in science and philosophy.
