@megan.smiley221 i liken it to humanism, it's practically atheist god-wise, and teaches respect instead of demanding obediance, much better and more liekly to work. i keep pointing out that unlike shinto and buddhism, what is the use of the threat of hell when you will be forgiven if you repent your crimes? the japanese have no forgiving god, they take personal responsibility. christianity is barbaric in comparison.

@teresateschen2960 i have a saying, the only way to be a good christian is to be atheist. humanisn is about respect, like the japanese bow to EACH OTHER, not about obedience where you bow to a god, who is basically threatening yuo to be obedient, rather than pointing out you the benefits of being (voluntarily) repsectful. shinto is practically atheist amd certainly close to humanist. humanisn ought to be the basic philosophies of the west as we become more atheist and non's.

yep. but without the threat of eternal burning, which is the most wonderful thing about western religion, a god that loves you to the point of burning you alive a lot if you can't quite bring yourself to love him back.

i'm atheist and shinto is the nearest thing i can think of to humanism where there is no god but you acknowledge respect for all other humans and nature, it was so pleasant to visit the shrines and for a change feel comfortable in making a prayer. christianity and islam are really horrid religions all centered around obedience to tyrants calling thenselves god, and punishments for crimes the gods invent, followed up by threats of eternal burning. shinto on the other hand, and japan itself, is about MUTUAL respect, you bow to EACH OTHER not a god, and you learn respect for nature, but as a mutual benefit - much easier to get into and go along with that god threatening you all the time if you slip up. i love japan and i love the people, i wish there was less oppression though, it's a very claustrophobic place, not designed for the individual but society.

@NickRyanBayon this is the problem in the west, everyone wants to be a philosopher. do you read what you write or is it stream of consciousness psycho-babble? what i love about shinto is as an atheist i can get my head around it, it doesn't offend me, and it's practicle and sensible, it makes no unreaonable demands on people, it is about respect for each other and nature, unlike the christian mythology that is BS, threatening and a contradiction - you'll get punished but you won't get punished if you say the magic words. if you think THAT makes sense, then gawd help you.

@ひろぽん-c9x yep, i've been to japan (my in-laws live in kanagawa) and i'm very atheist, but it's a really pleasant experience to go to the shrine and even pray, i can see the benefit of having respect for other humans and nature, like the japanese bow to EACH OTHER instead of a god DEMANDING obedience. i'd much rather adopt shinto than become a christian.

shinto and japan are about MUTUAL respect, people bow to EACH OTHER, not to a deity or even a ruler. the christian and islamic mythologies are about DEMANDING OBEDIENCE and rely on threats, i'm very definitely atheist but when i was in japan going to the shrine and praying seemed perfectly natural (i have a saying, if you want to be a good christian, be atheist) shinto is mutual respect and respect for nature, western religions are about bullying people.

@ki8115 or nosey. my ex wife who is japanese said one reason she left japan is there is no privacy and people gossip all the time :) i thought that the speaker they have in the house, that makes announcements about local events and information was handy, but my ex said it was intrusive.

our son went to japanese school one morning a week, the kids there all passed japanese GCSE a year early, and i don't know of any disciplanary issues, the parents were involved too. i recal sports day as being great fun, parents kids and teachers all got involved, there was music, food and every sport, and agin races for parents as well as kids. on the other hand the state school sports days were the most boring thing i can imagine - i keep suggesting we need more cross over between international schools and state schools, even the private school our son attended was lame on sportsday in comparison. one was enjoyable and i looked forward to, the other a chore.
