  1. it's not so much height as movement, the earth will appear to be a disk whatever distance, but the bulge - the curve - only becomes apparent if you are moving. you really need paralex. the disk, the horizon is always a circle and the extreme of the circle is always at the "same height" so unless you move around that circle it will appear flat. ish.
