When his father in law died, the slaves owned by George Custis were to be set free. Lee used every means possible to circumvent the law and keep them as slaves! Add to the fact that Lee had taken an oath to defend and protect the US and the Constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic. He took up arms in violation of that oath, so much for being an "honorable" man.
