  174. Okay with Musk and Twitter, I'm sure is was pure incompetence! But this happened to me years ago. I received an email from HR telling me to report to a meeting. Not unusual at all. When I got there the Chef Information Officer jumped up as I entered the room and rushed over to me, telling me to go back to my desk and he would talk to me later. Totally confused I did as he told me, as he was my manager's manager! My thoughts at the time were, okay how did I screw up? Nope wasn't me as I later learned everyone at the meeting was laid off as part of a RIF (Reduction In Force). I was later told by the CIO, that HR had coded my job incorrectly and thus I was placed on the list for that meeting. My job? I was one of two Senior Systems Administrators with institutional knowledge of "how things worked" that "kept the lights on". Some how I had been coded as a SALES MANAGER! Same pay scale and benefits package etc so it had gone unnoticed. That was quickly corrected in my file and someone in HR got a less than satisfactory review that year.

What I ended up doing is getting a used HP Eletedesk G2 mini to run those applications. It draws less than 65 watts and sits in a closet. I access it from my Fedora Linux based systems via Remmina using RDP, Total cost of additional hardware was less than $90 and came with a Windows 10 pro license. Yes I could have used bottles but this was a better fit

Thankfully I've heard from all of them and all are safe. But all suffered major material loses in one way or another. I'm from the Chicago area and witnessed the 1990 Plainfield Tornado (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990_Plainfield_tornado) and watched a town wiped from the map, 29 killed and 353 injured including a very good friend. There are wildfires in some states, mudslides in others and of course hurricanes and tornadoes. My point is, there really isn't a "safe" place to live without problems. Is there? Oh and I weathered Milton with little more than tree limbs down, some shingles lifted and a few days without power. I got lucky!
