He was conveniently late to every battle in the Jacobite Risings he turned up to so my guess is he was timing his appearance to benefit his clan. His lands adjoined Campbell lands, who were largely (not all) supporting the Hanoverians, so I don't really blame him for being cagey. Rob Roy is supposed to have hidden behind our village Oak and awaited the passing of Graham of Killearn one morning, who had been one of the accusers of Rob Roy's youngest son (Robin) in the abduction and forced marriage of a local girl. Rob Roy stepped out from behind the tree and promptly slew the man before heading swiftly north, only to find out the man he killed he'd misidentified and he was completely innocent; so he's not the gallant hero hereabouts.
