  1. You'd perhaps be interested in 'What the Victorians did for us' by Adam Hart-Davies TV series and book. He also did a Tudors & Stuarts version. Anything by him is engaging. Its easy to have a negative attitude on the Victorian 'Dark Satanic Mills' and the low life expectancy. I find the whole era of industrialisation depressing but it did eventually force through many of the benefits of 'modern' life in developed nations. Whether we are actually happier because of it is a whole other debate.
