How you drive is likely killing your gas mileage. Fast accelerations, not coasting up to red lights or stop signs, not strategically coasting to hit green lights to avoid stopping, driving much over 65 MPH and increasing wind resistance, and not using cruise control on the freeway can easily reduce gas mileage 20%, or even more. A family member gassed my Highlander and drove it home. The MPG after the fill-up was 16.8. I did the same trip using all the tactics listed above, and my gas mileage was over 27 MPG for the trip. Now, I didn't get home as fast as my family member, so there are tradeoffs.
Just remember that every time you hit the breaks, only to start up again, is burnt up gas mileage. Do things to safely minimize breaking requirements. The MPG difference can be very significant.
