Germany has a lower population density than the NL, more km of expensive roads per tax payer, and more traffic that wears the road since people aren't biking as much. What may look like a minor upgrade to us living in the NL, can be a massive investment into cars in a time that we should be driving less. Since the 1970s, the Dutch have made some pretty smart choices in terms of urban design and mobility, more so than the neighbors, and now we're reaping the benefits.

@maxz9787 Dutch roads are narrow on purpose. Wider streets make people drive faster and are therefore more dangerous. Narrow streets are safer, especially for people on bikes, because drivers have to go a bit more slowly and pay more attention.
