  1. The secret is separation. Instead of splitting every street 30% bikes 70% cars, they should have bike-only streets, maybe every third. Sure, cars would lose a bit of space, but pedestrians would be attracted to the quieter street, reducing conflicts and improving traffic flow on the car streets. Another tactic the Dutch use is pedestrianizing a few blocks around major transit hubs because that keeps the people flowing in and out of transit.
