  115.  @Skyfoogle  The Helsinki region has 1.3 million people, 25% of the entire country. The national government is planning on building trains to the closest other cities that would put more than 50% of the whole country's population within 1 to 1.5 hour's reach from downtown Helsinki by train (plus bus), even more as Helsinki and other cities in south-southwestern Finland keep booming like crazy. You couldn't do that with cars because they take about 2 hours when there's no traffic even though it's all highways from downtown to downtown the whole way. Downtown Helsinki is on a narrow peninsula so small, that it's practically an island connected to everything else with massive bridges. Only so many cars can fit on Helsinki's limited road network that the city has to think of other ways to get more people in and out of the city. These commuters from outside the city that you mention are tired of sitting in endless traffic on bridges as locals are taking their cars to do shopping. The locals are tired of having to take the car to go shopping because biking still feels dangerous and the buses and trams/streetcars are stuck behind cars. What the city is doing is looking at what modes of transport are used on what roads and reassigning the space accordingly, so as to best fit the needs of the people and not have economic growth be hindered by people struggling to get from one place to another. According to the city, only 25% of trips in Helsinki are done by car, so why do they get 75% of the street and most of the transportation budget? Despite the sub-arctic climate, Helsinki has the world's most popular bike-sharing scheme; why can't bicyclists have their own lanes where they feel safe and seen? Why not have more people living on this end of the highway rather than the other?

  227. Europe here chiming in. Don't make the same mistakes as America did, please. If you think that adding more and more lanes and underpasses and overpasses will solve traffic, look at Los Angeles or Houston because those are the cities you're modeling yours after. In both cities, the economy is suffering because people can't get anywhere, emergency services are stuck in traffic, deliveries are late, distances are great. They are endless parking lots because those cars need places to be stored. The fact is that cars take up too much space. No city in the history of the earth has ever paved its way out of traffic jams. 10 sq m per one person is simply too much. And because people love comfort and personal space, they will take private cars if you give them the opportunity. This is called induced demand, look it up. In order to fit more people onto the streets, and especially into intersections, you need to make one traveler more space-efficient. If you want to learn how to avoid congestion, you need to learn from cities that have the least congestion, not the most. Ever heard of cars getting into a traffic jam in Amsterdam? How about Venice? What they did was not to allow too many cars in the first place, so the cities are in constant motion average speeds remain higher. That's the end goal, but here's a few simple half-measures that will go a long way: 1) Give buses their own lanes on every major road. 2) Give perks to people that drive with more than 1 person in the car. 3) Give separate lanes to bikes and mopeds. They take up a fraction of the space of a car, so their use should be encouraged. Make sure that they are as far away from car traffic and that they form coherent wholes that go from place A to place B. 4) Block through-traffic in major downtown areas and major transit hubs. This will ensure that those who have other options like bike, public transport, foot, or whatever will take them instead of getting in the way of other traffic that actually needs to be for one reason or another. Reducing traffic noise and obstacles makes for some really great shopping areas, by the way. Kind of like outdoor malls. 5) Remove parking from major roads and move them somewhere else. Look for spaces where there's even a tiny bit of extra room for parked cars and remove as many from a busier road. Cars looking for a parking spot, and then eventually parking into it, get in the way of others that need to get through.
