I'm Canadian too, I had friends who were cousins, who told me what their Ukrainian parents as children and their grandparents went thru in the Ukraine in 1930's during " Holodomor", Stalin's purposely man made starvation of millions of Ukrainians (which was genocide) and why they fled to Canada, I was horrified. Since then I've made friends who now live in Canada, who had lived in Poland when it was controlled by the Soviets and had family members marry spouses who had lived in Czechoslovakia when it was under control of the Soviets. Talking to people about their experience living under Soviet control from three different countries yet all have the same bad opinion, fear the Russians and is why they all fled to Canada.

Chrystia Freeland, although born in Canada, her mother was born in Ukraine. While she was attending University of Kyiv, she worked with journalist Bill Keller of the New York Times to uncover the truth of the Bykivnia graves, an unmarked mass grave site, where the Soviet secret Police disposed of tens of thousands of dissidents. The official Soviet story is held that the graves were the result of Nazi atrocities. She translated the stories of locals who had witnessed covered trucks and "puddles of blood in the road" that predated the Nazi invasion, adding evidence that the site was actually the result of Stalinist repression. She attracted the attention of the KGB which tagged her with the code name "Frida", and Soviet newspapers, who attacked her as a foreigner meddling in their internal affairs over her contacts with Ukrainian activists. The KGB surveilled Freeland and tapped her phone calls, and documented the young Canadian activist delivering money, video and audio recording equipment, and a personal computer to contacts in Ukraine. She used a diplomat at the Canadian embassy in Moscow to send material abroad in a secret diplomatic pouch, worked with foreign journalists on stories about life in the Soviet Union, and organised marches and rallies to attract attention and support from western countries. On her return from a trip to London in March 1989, Freeland was denied re-entry to the USSR. By the time her activism within Ukraine came to an end, Freeland had become the subject of a high-level case study from the KGB on how much damage a single determined individual could inflict on the Soviet Union.

@darthwiizius After Russia invaded and annexed Crimea.UK, US and Canada sent their own military to Ukraine in 2015 to train the Ukraine military in 2015. Canada was rotating their military units in six month deployments. This training has continued since then with only a brief interruption when Russia invaded in Feb 2022 but is now done in Europe and in the UK, instead of in Ukraine.

@TheHesseJames Russia under Putin is either an Authoritarian autocracy as Putin has unlimited power or Totalitarianism as Putin has strict control of all aspects within Russia thru repression, censorship and terrorism including changing history. A quote from Putin in 2012 “If I believed that a totalitarian and authoritarian system is the most preferable for us, I would simply change the constitution,”. Putin has changed the Russian Constitution to suit his personal needs and ambition; his political oppositions either end up dead or in jail; if you say war instead of “Special Military Operation” you are detained. Putin controls the FSB, the FSB control espionage and enforcing. If I had to compare Putin's Russian government to something, due to the corruption, the theft by a few of the wealth from the people and the hits on oilgarchy and political opposition, it would be the Mafia.

@geretstarseeker453 Zelensky has done a lot to rid of corruption, he oversaw the lifting of legal immunity for members of parliament and made progress in tackling corruption. Zelensky's party proposed reforms to Ukraine's media laws with the intent to increase competition and loosen the dominance of Ukrainian oilgarchs on television and radio broadcasters. A bill creating a public registry of Ukraine's oligarchs, banning them from participating in privatizations of state owned companies, and forbidding them from contributing financially to politicians. Passed a bill updating and reforming Ukraine's referendum laws, that Ukraine's Court had declared unconstitutional in 2018 (Fixing the referendum law had been one of Zelensky's campaign promises)
