That comes from being 12 during the Cuban Missile Crisis, then as a Canadian later dating a man whose grandparents and parents as children escaped to Canada from Ukraine during the Stalin's man made starvation of millions of Ukrainians (Holodomor) , being friends with people who escaped at that time from Soviet occupied Poland and Czechoslovakia ) with one becoming my in-law when he married into my family). Some of what they told me that was done to them and how they had to live was shocking. Plus was friends with a man whose father was a Polish fighter pilot who helped defend England during the London Blitz but after the war he could not returned to Poland or he'd be persecuted by the Soviets, yet Stalin had told the British that Poland would be a free and independent country after the war, when Stalin sought the help of the British after Germany broke The Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact by invading. Decades later meeting Russians who had immigrated to Canada after the fall of the Soviet Union, where I discovered their knowledge of WW2 and the liberation (occupation) of former Soviet countries was incorrect yet they adamantly defended their view. As Russians are taught in school lies or false information about WW2 and who knows what else they teach their children.
