I had a brother-in-law who lived in Czechoslovakia when it was under the Soviets, plus friends who had lived in Ukraine and Poland when those countries were under the control of the Soviets. Things they have told me about how difficult it was, was shocking for me as a Canadian, who has lived all my life in Canada. Plus I'm friends with the son of a Polish fighter pilot who fought to defend Britain and went on to fight Nazi Germany, after the war was over he couldn't return to Poland due to Stalin.
