I did devise a voting system for public verification once. It relied upon having a trusted node to do the voting, probably to be implemented in a smartcard. The vote itself would be delivered in pieces, making it impossible to filter them out without showing that you were removing votes, and the whole trail would be auditable to the degree of proving each voter got a vote in, but only the voter himself could trace his vote distinctly, if he stored a log. I'd be very surprised if such a system did get put in service, though. The voter would still need to trust one machine to not misrepresent his choices. And given that secure smartcards themselves are shying away from any real auditability (they stick to the "this company we paid says we can be trusted" kind), lots of problems remain.
