@henkholdingastate We've done driver level emulation, yes. In particular for wifi cards. But Windows bundles tend to be a bloated mess without adequate interfaces, so lacking something like NDIS many drivers are just useless on their own.

Your title is backwards. Windows doesn't support the specialized hardware, the hardware vendor supports Windows. To the point they fight to make the hardware unusable without it. In the past hardware would be delivered with documentation to make it usable, in particular printers and computers. Now many vendors somehow think having more customers is a threat.

@Stszelec01 Please explain your reasoning. How does making the device harder to use make it more attractive?

@Stszelec01 Not making much sense there, but sure. How many people would have not bought an iPhone if it could be used right away like any other phone instead of requiring activation using iTunes?
