While a slightly more complex interpretation, I think it may be 3 enabled by 4, redirecting the motive: "A free software phone is imperative to create, by all means, so whatever means these guys picked is fine by me." This allows for cultish recruitment of people not driven by profit. When people want something to be true, even believe it's the foundation of their self image, like "I'm honest" or "the government is lying to us", they tend to make extremely biased readings of any situation vaguely connected to the idea.

@CptJistuce A lot of CS departments think so. It's very clear their job is not to serve the customer but get the errand dismissed ASAP.

9:45 "We have not had an opportunity to explain..." We are expected to disregard the months they ignored their customers.

Most villains aren't comic book style... but some actually are. They tend to congregate in industries like oil, tobacco, and conspiracy theory cults. The scientology cult is a remarkable example, with their leader literally publishing the game plan as a book before setting it in motion.

This reminds me of another pyramid scheme company. They started out with the name Eve, but rebranded themselves Dough. They were pretty loud about their model, which relied on getting new prepaid orders in to fund production of the devices they already owed. Now they sell a monitor brand called Spectrum (let me reiterate: the brand, not the product). Of course, the usual model of selling the idea to "venture capitalists" also involves accruing a bunch of debt before making a thing.

@av3ng3r-49 Eve, now Dough, branders of the Spectrum monitors, were rather explicit about this being their MO.
