  1. THIS is what the Free Software movement, as proposed and championed by the GNU Project and the Free Software Foundation, is about. Software running on the computer you own should be under your control. There may certainly be other restrictions on what you let it do, e.g. a moped may have a speed limit or a radio transmitter a transmit time limit, but those are about device actions, not user ability. This is the type of rights and freedoms that were quite literally taken for granted in the infancy of computing; the proprietary software model was championed by Microsoft and insanely escalated in video game consoles and "smartphones". Less restrictive smartphones predate both Apple and Android, by the way (derived from PDA systems like Pilot and Psion). People just didn't see giant advertising campaigns about it because they didn't have the captive revenue models.
