Nathan did know how to do that conversion. The guy's a charlatan, quite intentionally deceiving people. That particular demand was only used to bait out an apparent fault so he could get an excuse to start yelling, because getting to any understanding would undermine his position and routine. He has a handful of modes; boggling by incredulity, dazzling with incomprehensive gobbledygook, yelling to drown out (augmented by liberal muting). It's all about building a following of gullible people, joined by the erroneous belief that by deciding some group was trying to trick them, they're no longer being tricked. If someone works themselves or you into a fervour, chances are they're going for emotional manipulation, not rational examination.

@chbu7081 If he wasn't, his routine wouldn't be so transparent. But stupid does not rule out malicious.

@chbu7081 Remember the "adequately" part of that rule of thumb. Stupidity isn't sufficient to explain the vehemence with which he attacks. It covers a lot of flat earth culture, but not so many of the campaigners. He's afraid of losing authority, not of being wrong.

I had a look at Mars this Tuesday night, during the full moon (yeah, only time for weeks we had clear skies). Sure was pretty and round. I wish I had a telescope mount to make out more detail.

Trebuchet Conveniently, he may be both! It's so much easier to keep up appearances if you believe the crap you're spouting. It's more of a habit than something with practical effects on his life. Don't expect him to pick up any navigation skills.

INERT Coin flip Earth would sure be convenient! No need for those pesky time zones, because everything would rise and set at the same time everywhere, including the sun. Of course, it would also be structurally impossible and involve a lot of sideways falling, but who wouldn't make that trade off?

Remember, he's an incredible jerk, and flatearthers in his world are people that will both listen to and sponsor him. Anyone responding to his vitriol in a sane manner is automatically less nice in his egocentric view. (Also, egocentrism is the natural opposition of heliocentrism.)
