@kineahora8736 That would have been after the refurbishment. All four Iowa class BBs were refurbished under a plan of then NavSec James Webb. My late father was typedesk supervisor -- sort of the XO of the project -- for the Missouri's overhaul at Long Beach, which was kinda cool as he served on her as an enlisted man during Korea. One of the first use of drones in the role we see so much today in Ukraine was during the Gulf War, where BB-63s drones were used to direct the 16 inch guns (she was part of what was basically a diversionary campaign designed to keep Sadam thinking the coalition would attempt an amphibious landing. Anyhoo there are stories, perhaps apocryphal, of Iraqi soldiers trying to indicate they were surrendering to the drones, they feared the gunfire that would follow the drone's appearing.

No, they were designed for the conventional surface battle role. When that became by and large obsolete their incredible engineering, speed, and gunnery was easily convertible to other roles.

@ramal5708 And very effective in shore bombardment as well...so much so that during Vietnam the New Jersey was dragged out of mothballs and sent to the 'gun line' off of the coast around the DMZ. And that was only using the 5 inch guns.
