Comments by "Mitch Young" (@mitchyoung93) on "Fake US Promises to Ukraine? Kaja Kallas’ Emotional Warning 💔🇪🇺 | Munich 2025 #eudebates #nato" video.
Before Kaja Kallas got the job she has now she was the prime minister of a 'nation' that has about the same population of San Diego, CA. I.e. a mid sized city for the US or any normal country. The EU really is a place for politicians from tiny 'states' to aspire to having great power. Another fun fact about Kallas is her father was a Soviet officer, editor of the Estonian communist newspaper, and deputy to the All Soviet parliament. We can't blame her for her father's actions, but I've never read that she denounced him, and it certainly is interesting to see that 'elites' propagate themselves across radically different systems.

@ranndino The uprisingi against the Majdan events started entirely organically. After all, Lugansk and Donetsk had voted for autonomy --local control of police and education, federalization of the Ukraine, full participation in the Commonwealth of Independent States, etc - way back in 1994. And of course Crimea was already officially autonomous.

@antoinebaldur2941 They did nothing. Stalin waited two whole weeks which was quite some time in terms of the fast pace of German advance. The Western allies did zip.

@The_Informer There was no treaty, true. Russia should have gotten something in writing. However I believe Gorbachev confirmed that the understand from talks was that NATO would not expand and that. an inclusive security structure for Europe would be constructed. There were hints of that with the OSCE.

Also, it is not certain that "Ukraine had nuclear weapons". There were nuclear weapons on the terrain of the Ukraine, but the command and control for the strategic weapons was in Moscow. Local commanders had control of tactical nukes, but many of those officers would have been Russian or other Soviet nationalities other than Ukrainian. At any rate there is no evidence the Ukraine could maintain the weapons...in fact they had to sell some of their strategic bombers (Tu-160s) to Russia because (1) they were rotting on the airfields and (2) they owed Russia money for natural gas.
