Abkhazia and South Ossetia were autonomous regions within the Georgian SSR throughout most of Soviet history. When that polity dissolved the Abkhazians and Ossetians fought for autonomy from the Georgian central government and won it (each people are totally linguistically distinct from Georgians). Russian peacekeepers guaranteed the settlement way back, and 'the West' was cool with that because we didn't want a big giant Yugoslavia repeat throughout ex-Soviet lands. Then Georgia got a color revolution, tried to suppress the autonomous areas, and Russia stopped them. Simple as that. And if 80% of the people of Georgia want to join the EU, why did Georgian Dream with the parliamentary elections? They are of course free to throw that part out of power at the upcoming elections.

@steam_bigh8899 NATO expansion wasn't even a twinkle in George HW Bush's eye when South Ossetia and Abkhazia got their autonomous status from the 'independent' Georgia.

@paulbubb3437 Putin was driving a taxi when the ethnic tensions in the space that was the former Georgian SSR and Moldavian SSR and Ukrainian SSR came to the surface. Both Lugansk and Donetsk voted for autonomy from Kiev way back in 1994, for example. If anything it is the aggressive and armed bureaucracy called NATO and the protectionist and cultural expansionist thing called the EU that have fueled the conflicts by supporting ultra-nationalist governments in Georgia, the Ukraine and the yipping Pomeranians of the Baltics.

This is precisely why we have bases around the world...to make gameplay convenient.

@yarkobroda Yeah dude, Russia, flat on its back in 1992,93,94 , decided to create a 'frozen conflict' so they could invade Georgia a decade and a half later. Right...The truth is that Ossetians, Abkhazians and Georgians are totally different peoples and the former two had autonomy in the Soviet Union and, organically, won it from Tbiisi in the early 90s. And that's the case with Transdneistria too.

@brittanywinn3955 Some day Quebec will be free, then Alberta, then Manitoba.

@Kuronekko647 Some Chechen's did want to be part of Russia and indeed are part of the Russian Federation troops that have liberated much of the Donbas and New Russia.

@indecentanalyst One segment of the Chechens. Islamicists

So the same groups of "native" people lived on the same land forever? Or did they conquer from others? Really dude stop being a self hating white guy.
2
@maka6134 No indication that they want to be 'free'. Even the Chechen war was a civil war.
2
@yomeroyomismo8212 Even them. Remember the US wasn't even too keen on the USSR breaking up.

@CastorRabbit Is Russia in Austria? Kazakhstan? Mongolia?

@xtripx4273 The number if the so-called 'Latvians' ...really 3-4 related but distinct people cobbled together by 19th century ethnographers...reached a peak under the USSR. And no, I'm not counting Russian speakers in 'Latvia' ...ethnic Latvians. Your country has continually lost population after joining the EU/NATO

@raindance6929 She's a prop that is literally in every 'Western' propaganda piece about this 'conflict' (which was ended decades ago for everyone not dreaming of an expansionist Georgia.)

There is no evidence that the Paris peace talks played any role in Nixon's victory. In fact LBJ bowed out of the race long before the election. There was the RFK assaination, the violence at the Chicago Democrat convention. No way any Democrat would win that year.

@samihamchev9528 The EU has banned RT etc from its space. If you are getting 'Russian propaganda it is because significant proportions of your population realize the close historical ties between Bulgaria and Russia. In fact you wouldn't exist without Russia.

@Funnyfeather Those people have their republics in the Russian Federation, yes. Hence the 'Federation' part.
