  1. We have it in the west in various guises too. In the US, or really just the Gulf Coast, they have 'mardi gras'...literally 'fat Tuesday'. The last day before lent (not a week as you have). In the UK have have 'pancake tuesday'. Again the whole idea is to cook a lot of food in lard or other animal fat before 40 days of fasting (or technically abstaining) from animal products. Again not as eleborate and not a complete week, but still the idea shares a root.
