Franklin Roosevelt's last words were, "I've got a terrific headache."

French is ugly to my ear and Norwegian very pretty. Native English speaker, here.

The Brazilian who taught me it says that he thinks his own language sounds "gay." But I think it's pretty. It's just not as elegant and economical in grammar and syntaxes as the other Romance languages. It seems wordy.

You know why Portuguese is less significant than Spanish? It's not the surface area it covers. It's the fact that spoken Portuguese is really hard for Spanish speakers to understand (especially Continental Portuguese). Brazilians typically can understand Spanish speakers okay, but not vice-versa. And there are more Spanish speakers in the world. As much as you want Portuguese to be important, it is not.

Of course, and Greek sounds much like Spanish--two of the best. --Your friend, Mrs. Nicolaides

But is it prettier than Spanish?

I made my own alphabet and shared it with a few friends when I was 12, for secrecy purposes when we passed notes in class. Later on I added a bunch of letters, some for consonant blends, and others just to make it harder to crack the code.

Or a major oppo campaign. We plebes tend to dislike opera. I can understand Italian; opera just makes it unintelligible and kind of annoying.

@JohnSheffield1963 It is frequently beautiful, but hard to follow without a libretto, I suppose.

Norwegian is very pretty. I love it when the older people in my family speak it, even more when they sing in it. You might say that I'm biased, and I am. But you have an absolute bug up your bunda when it comes to you native tongue, Moreira. You're militant.

English is such a vocally relaxed language. Not musical at all, as spoken. I speak it natively, and of the languages I have learned, only Russian soothes the throat in a similar way.

I thought it was pretty until I learned how to pronounce it right. It hurts my throat. Big-time. "J'ai un peu peur de feu ma sœur.>> Ouch!

@cebillon Sure there are. What I wrote up there was an exercise designed to help a student wrap his throat around a couple of the harder to pronounce vowels.

Jeez. And here I wish most of the Latinate words were kicked out of the tongue. The only thing that made English sweeter was the onslaught of the Vikings. We made each other's grammar short and sweet. If it were up to me, Anglish would shape up English. French hurts my throat and smacks of a barnyard beast choking on an apple. French is half phlegm.

Hebrew and Arabic sound as if the speaker is choking on a mothball.
