  1. It is no sin to be able to hold it together. Keeping calm in an emergency is that special something that makes people excellent first responders. There is always time later to let yourself feel the fear. She has small children to care for.

  2. It is impossible to know what is going on in her head. I am prone to be like her. In my case, the concern is there, but I suppress strong emotions and give my relative or patient (I was an EMT and am a nurse now) the type of reassurance they seek. Sometimes it is obvious concern and affection, sometimes joking, sometimes just quiet presence. I was just a patient myself this week, and my husband gave me what he knew I needed—I really needed him to go rest and take care of himself, mostly, and take care of things at home.

  3. I have seen that, working as an EMT. One man collapsed mid-sentence. 2 hours later, the doctors declared him dead.

  4. This took me back to my ambulance days, seeing people suddenly collapse with catastrophic brain bleeds. This gentleman is okay, now, I hope! I recognize the combing motion as the pain strikes in the neck and back of the head.
