  1. I once had a hoarder friend stay at my house for just 3 days, and I felt like her personal valet, following her around, throwing messes away, putting the lid back on the sugar bowl, picking up dropped clothing, and so forth. I'm not all that neat, but she drove me off my rocker.

  3. That is how we feel, yes, but a person does have a right to live in filth. Where it breaks down, requiring intervention, is when it involves pets, children, vulnerable adults, and/or attracting rats and other pests to the vicinity.

  4. I used to work on an ambulance crew, and yes, we reserved judgment for later, even if we had to rearrange the living room in order to "uncover" our patient.

  9. Either she's part fiddler crab, or her right arm has developed lymphedema from having had a mastectomy on that side.

  12. Do you really have to pit the homeless against the pathetic? She apparently had some sort of means to rent or own the house, and it's not as if there is a fixed number of houses available.

  13. Don't feel too bad for your mom. Dementia patients who hoard seem to do so out of confusion and fear of scarcity or theft. Simplifying their surroundings and establishing a predictable routine helps them calm down and reorient themselves pretty quickly. Seems to take around 3 weeks. Kind people around them do them more good than a big stash of possessions.
