  2. Ex-Democrat, ex-chair of my county party, here. Obama first disappointed, then appalled me with his lawlessness. Voted Bernie in the 2016 primary (because never Hillary). When Comey let HRC off the hook, I became forever independent that day, and donated to Trump's campaign. Voted Trump . . . and I support this president and like what he does. My guilty little fantasy is a Trump/Gabbard 2020 ticket. I can always cast an anti-war vote, and I'm fed up with the left/right false dichotomy. It's globalist/nationalist, now, and Trump/Gabbard would set a good tone.

  7.  @vedinthorn  You certainly can be an RN with an associates degree. I am, and I worked harder for that ADN than I ever did for my baccalaureate in foreign language. To be fair, my 4-year university degree has opened doors in nursing for me, too. You still learn how to conduct research with a standard baccalaureate--or used to, anyhow. Universities have begun to let things slide academically since I attended. Yes, I'm old!

  9. Vietnam was pivotal and a crisis, but it spurred the Awakening/Second Turning. It disunified us because we were in a generational mood to question the very institutions that had pulled us together a generation before. Today's younger Milennials and the Gen Zers will be in a position to manage the next Vietnam, in about 40 - 50 years from now. It's a biphasic crisis-response cycle, regular as a human lifespan, at least in New World countries like the United States.

  14. If you go back further in American/colonial history, as well as Old World history, the patterns are easily discerned. Tim just gave you a Cliff's Notes sample. And you're right--the concept allows plenty of variation. In the 1800s, America skipped right over one whole turning connected to the Civil War, for example. The crisis is not always war per se, 80 years is the shortest version of a sæculum, and there is never any guarantee that a given society will rise like a phœnix from the previous Fourth Turning. Sometimes, things just fly apart, period.
