Soviet Union only returned ITS OWN territories from polish occupation, and pushed back border to Germany, for it's safety. In 1937 Poland invaded Chechoslovakya toghether with Germany, and only Soviet Union helped them by weapon. In 1938 Soviet Union proposed to form a coalition to protect eastern Europe from the Nazis.

In the United States, by the way, there was also the death penalty and labor camps, and they contained no fewer people than the Soviet ones. So, in fact, America is no better than the USSR. Both in the USA and in the USSR, criminals worked in camps with a salary and were subjected to the death penalty.
