There WAS a reason - Stalin did it for industrial, economical and technological development of Soviet Union, without which USSR was unable to defeat Germany, and if USSR lost to Germany, then all Slavic people could have been murdered by Germans in concentration camps. So Stalin sacrficed part of the population to turn the illiteral agrarian peasant country into industrial and technological superpower, which survived the fight for existance against the enemy who wanted to commit genocide of all population of USSR. Killing few percent to save all is a fair trade, and this is what Stalin did, USSR made the fastest economical leap in history. A peasant country was turned into modern industrial developed country and launched the first human into space after 25 years and after the bloodiest war in history. Russians respect Stalin massively, he saved the country and it is not for you to judge. Considering the context I explained, it is mistaken to equalize Stalin and Hitler, Hitler murdered people because he was a maniac, while Stalin got Russia in very poor state and built cruel system to develop and protect this country. Stalin predicted WW2 already in 1932, there is his quote: "We are backward from most advanced countries for 30-50 years, if we wouldn't take measures they will smash us". And Western propaganda of course overexagerrated the number of victims of his regime - the most realistic number is 5 millions, not astronomic numbers with no proofs which are popular now.

@jayzandstra1830 non-Russian lands were NOT russified, Volga Germans got deported for collaboration, Ukrainians never were deported, about Chechens I don't know the reasons. But your main mistake is that modern Western propaganda trying to link Ukraine-Russia war to Stalin, there was NO Russification, actually under Soviet regime everything was vice-versa, Soviet ideology was about multinationalism, Soviets wanted to genetically and racially mix all people of USSR. And this is NOT a Russification because Russian nation will be destroyed and genetically replaced in such scenario. Soviets wanted to genetically mix everyone, and they achieved this in Kazakhstan, but Russia was too massive and Soviets needed maybe another century to achieve this. Lenin was a Jewish, and Jewish were opressed in Europe and in Russia, and under Bolshevicks, Russians were considered as colonizers, so Soviet policy was actually OPPOSITE to Russification, it was de-Russification, Soviets promoted Ukrainian nationalism and language while all of Ukraine was Russian speaking back then. There was DE-Russification, and Soviets gave Russian lands with Russian population to Ukraine and Kazakhstan, Lenin gave Donbass to Ukraine in 1917, and in 1954 Soviets gave Russian Crimea to Ukraine together with Russian population, and in 2014 these people, livibg on their land, returned to its native harbor and they support it. Soviets gave Russian lands to another countries, which Russia now returned after Western backed coup that happened in Ukraine in 2014, while with Kazakhstan Russia built friendly and healthy relations because there was no Western-backed coup.
