  5.  @Felix-ic1fc  you are wrong. There was an all-Union referendum and 78% of voters have voted to save Soviet Union. Soviet Union was dissovolved after Stalinist military coup attempt under leadership of KGB head Vladimir Kruchkov. KGB officers have arrested Michail Gorbachev in Crimea, as a result he was out of politics for forever, but democratic forces in Russia have won against this coup. Soviet Russia was ruled by anti-communist Boris Yeltsin, who made Russian republic autonomic from central Soviet government in 1990. Yeltsin crashed coup attempt, there was shooting, tanks and soldiers in Moscow, and Soviet Communist Party was banned on territory of USSR. Later anti-Soviet leaders of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus have signed the accords, according to which Russia, Ukraine and Belarus have left USSR together in one day against will of the people who voted by 78% to save USSR, and even much respected in the West Gorbachev wanted to save it, by reforming and liberalizing economy and forming confederation of all republics, but Gorbachev was arrested by unloyal KGB officers in Crimea during coup attempt and lost power to Vladimir Kruchkov, and Kruchkov lost power to Yeltsin. Crimea, Karabakh and other multi-national territories in USSR had status of autonomic republics. They were autonomic in government from their Soviet republics. And according to Sovet law there should have been a voting in Crimea for joining Russia or Ukraine, voting in Karabakh to join Armenia or Azerbaijan, voting in Abkhazia and South Ossetia to be independent from Georgia or not, because Abkhazians and Ossetians are different nation from Georgians and they want to be independent and don't want to be occupied by other country, and when there was collapse of USSR ongoing, in 1989 parlaments of Abkhazia and South Ossetia proclaimed themselves as an autonomic republics, so they wanted a voting in case of Georgia leaving USSR. There was no voting, and after Georgia have left USSR the war have started between Georgia, and Abkhazia and South Ossetia. And also there was a civil war in Georgia. The war resulted in Russian peacekeeping agreement with Georgian government that won the civil war, so Georgia officially allowed Russian peacekeepers to stay in Abkhazia and South Ossetia in 1993. But later there was a pro-Western coup in Georgia and pro-Western clown in power have decided that he can break the agreements and just invade this regions with help and support from NATO, and NATO would protect Georgia from significant Russian help and aid to Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Russia withdrew its forces from Georgia after Georgian proposal in 2007, and in 2008 Georgian army have invaded South Ossetia, and few Russian soldiers were killed as a result of shelling of the peacekeeping base where they were located according to document with Georgian signatures since 1993. Russian peacekeepers never attacked Georgians first. So, as an answer Russia conducted a peacekeeping operation in august 2008, saved independence of republics and put Western dogs on their place, as a result Georgian president Saacashwilli lost his power and found himself in prison, where he currently is located, and Geogia now have elite loyal to Russia to not provoke Russia. Russia don't need to capture and take territories to control it. We live in 21st century. Russian forces didn't annexed into Russia even inch of true Georgian territories, just returned Abkhazian and Ossetian lands to their owners. The same could be said about Ukraine - no need to capture its all. And the reason for war is the same as with Georgia. Ukraine wanted to invade Donbass, just like Georgia have invaded South Ossetia in 2008. Ukraine wanted NATO guarantees of defense in order to force Russia to sit calmly while Ukrainian forces would attack and rise Ukrainian flag in Donetsk, Luhansk or even Crimea. If Russia hadn't started this war first - Ukraine wanted to start it and attack Russian separatists, so Russia had no other choise, if fight is inevitable strike first. Russia have tried to negotiate with NATO, negotiations have failed, so the cannons started to talk. Russian plan was to force Ukraine to negotiations by using military. And there were negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Istambul, Turkey, in march 2022. Russia didn't wanted any additional territories of Ukraine, just neutral status and Ukrainian non-agression towards Donetsk and Luhansk PRs. Russia was ready to retreat to february 23rd line. Ukraine proposed a signal from Russia to show that Russia is ready to respect the peace accords, so Russia withdrew its forces from northern Ukraine and Kiev. And it was mistake, Ukraine have left negotiations after Western politicians have promised weapons aid and 1991 borders to Ukraine. But it was a lie - quick Ukrainian victory is not what West wants. West wants long slow attrition of Russia. So, Western help to Ukraine is insufficient for Ukrainian victory, they simply use Ukrainians as cannon fodder, and everything about retaking Crimea from Western politicians was a lie, with insufficient help Ukraine was unable to achieve it and people are dying for third year for no reason, while in march 2022 Russia was ready to give all territory back and retreat to february 23rd 2022 line just fot neutral status and non-agression towards Russian separatists. But Ukraine have forced Russia to change plans and annex multi-national partially Russian regions with Russian military presence after 7 months of war.
