Crimea is a historical Russian territory that is populated by Russians much more than by Ukrainians. However, in 1954, Russia transferred Crimea to Ukraine. Those were Soviet times. In the days of the USSR, no one could have thought that the USSR would cease to exist, and therefore Russia transferred its territory to Ukraine for maintenance - Crimea does not have a land connection with Russia, but it does have a connection with Ukraine. Therefore, in 1954, Russia decided to transfer this territory, because all communications and infrastructure went to Crimea from Ukraine, and it would be more logical to manage Crimea from the Kyiv administration. However, I repeat - this is Russian territory. In 2014, 60% of the population of Crimea are Russians, and only 16% are Ukrainians.
