You are talking nonesence. NATO was expanding to Russian borders for 30 years BEFORE war in Ukraine, in 90s Czhehia, Poland, Slovakia and many other countries joined NATO, they did it in the 90s and early 00s, when Russia was a peaceful and democratic country with freedom of speech and fair elections. In 90s Russian elections were fair and parlament had many different parties. In late 80s and after the collapse of Soviet Union Russia wanted to build friendly relarions and economic ties with the West, Russia was free and democratic country, in 00s Russia even attempted to join EU or establish non-visa border regime with EU. Russia was opened to World after 70 years of socialism and isolation. But what we have received? We have received NATO expansion to our borders and threat to our security, while democratic and free Russia in 90s and 00s wasn't a threat to any of its neighbour. Russia spent years trying to negotiate with West and stop NATO expansion, but negotiations failed, so we have no other choise in front of existential threat but to start special military operation in Ukraine. God bless Putin and glory to our military!

@superspy-xv9sx Ukraine broke Budapest memorandum in 2002, 12 years before Crimea, when they announced that they would join NATO. In 90s and 2002 Russia was a free peaceful and democratic country with fair elections, and in 2002 Ukraine was friendly to Russia and Russia itself had pro-Western politics and economic course. So, there was no threat from democratic and free pro-Western Russia in the 90s and 00s, but NATO was expanding to Russian borders despite guarantees from Western politics that were given in late 80s, making an existential threat to Russia, so in 2007 there was a Putin's Munich speech, when Putin politely asked West to stop it, before 2007 Russia wanted to join European Union and had pro-Western foreign policy. In 2002, when Ukraine announced to join NATO and EU, Russia supported Ukraine because Ukraine was friendly and Russia also thought that Russia would make closer ties with West. But further expansion of NATO and rejection from EU pushed Russia to neutral position towards West. Russia was neutral towards West untill 2014, when illegal anti-constitutional coup happened in Kyiv with neo-nazis and help from American special services. After numerous agressive words of Ukrainian nazi groups such as "Right sector" ethnical Russian regions of Ukraine, such as Crimea (in 2013 60% of population were Russians), and Donbass (~50% of population were Russians in 2013 and another 50% Ukrainians) wanted to separate from Ukraine, but Ukrainian government, which came to power as a result of illegal coup in Kyiv, hypocritically blamed them in "terrorism" and Ukraine started the war in the Donbass. I think that if people in Kyiv had right to self-determination, so Russian people in Crimea and Donbass, which make 50-60% of population on this regions, also had such right, and it was a hypicrisy and double standarts from Ukrainian revolutionary government who came to power as a result of coup in Kyiv, to blame Russian protesters in same things they did. Ukraine started this war, not Russia. Ukraine started this war and Ukraine wanted to join NATO because Ukraine wanted to recapture this Russian territories with Russian population, but we didn't allowed this to happen. Putin is the greatest defender of Russian people and Russian national interests, if these millions of Russians in Crimea and the Donbass have chosen to join Russia in 2014, Russia would provide them with their right to self-determination, guaranteed by UN codex's first words, that "peoples have right to self-determination and independence".

@superspy-xv9sx Ukraine was a country with fair elections, and 2010 elections were also completely fair. Pro-Russian candidate who came to power in Ukraine as a result of 2010 election, won this election fairly. And Yanukovich wasn't a "puppet". He was trying to seat on two chairs between Russia and EU. If Ukrainians were not satisfied with his decisions, they had possibility to elect another president in fall 2014, but Ukrainian oligarchs and elites have chosen to make an illegal coup in Kyiv with support of paid nazi groups and American special services. Oligarchs are always pro-Western people, even in Russia, because they are owners of big corporations and they need access to Western market and dollar by as lowest as possible price, and in the 90s when Russia was ruled by oligarchs Russia had a pro-Western policy. Russian oligarchs are also pro-Western. Nazi groups were used by Ukrainian oligarchs as a paid "useful idiots" during the revolution in Kyiv and after the coup Ukrainain elites who came to power didn't allowed this nazis to gain any power, and for example in march 2014 Ukrainian special services assasinated one of the most influencial leader of Ukrainian nationalists, don't remember his name, Sashko Beliy probably. But the seed of conflict was sown. In Crimea in 2013 60% of the local population were Russians, and only 20% of Crimean population were Ukrainians. In the Donbass Russians and Ukrainians were divided 50/50. And during the revolution in Kyiv Ukrainian nazis had agressive rethoric towards Russian population from this regions. So of course ethnical Russian regions such as Crimea and the Donbass have chosen to separate from Ukraine. And they had right to do this, considering the fact that 1 month earlier an illegal, anti-constitutional coup had happened in Kyiv. If people in Kyiv had right to self-determination, if people in Kyiv made their own revolution, so Russian people from Crimea and south-Western Ukraine also had such right. But Ukrainian elites, who came to power as a result of illegal coup in Kyiv, hypocritically blamed Russian protesters in "illegal coup = terrorism", and Ukraine had started a bloody civil war against its own citizens, Ukraine started war against Russian population. Russia at that time continued to trade gas to Ukraine in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and up to 2023. Russia had no intention of occupying Ukraine, no agressive rethoric, despite the fact that Ukraine started a bloody war against its own Russian citizens in the Donbass. Russia provided Russian population in the Donbass by weapons and help, and Ukrainian army was unable to defeat them, and later the conflict was fronzen. But despite the freeze of the conflict, Ukraine still considerig this Russian territories populated by Russians as its own, and Ukraine wanted to conquer this Russian territories, conquer Crimea and Donbass, but in order to do this Ukraine needed to somehow cut off Russian weaponary supplies to Russian rebels. So, Ukraine continued its policy to join NATO started in 2002 with this intention. Russia don't have right to NOT protect Russian people in Russian historical lands, where this Russians are majority of population, so Russia was trying to negotiate with NATO peacefuly, in 2021 there was a negotiations in Switzerland between Russia and NATO, Russia reminded NATO that in late 80s and early 90s Western politics said to Gorbachev that there would be no NATO expansion. But negotiations failed, and facing existential threat Russia had no other choise but to try negotiate with power

@punish01 you are talking nonesence, I said that Russia was peaceful, democratic and free country in the 90s, and this is true, and in the 90s NATO expanded to Russian borders, causing existential threat to Russian security. Soviet Union done some bad things to this nations in the past, but Russia isn't a Soviet Union. The collapse of Soviet Union and independence of Russia from Soviet Union happened because Russian people in its majority, because Russia wanted to build a free pro-Western society with market economy, in late 80s Soviet Union ended a Cold War and allowed Eastern European countries to choose their way, in late 80s there was a liberalization in Soviet society. Russians wanted to live in friendly relationship with West, and in the 90s Russia was doing everything to show that Russia is opened to the World and to the West. There was no threat from Russia to Eastern European countries. And Russia IS NOT USSR. Soviet Union had few republics inside itself - Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and many others. Russia was 1/2 of Soviet Union by population and 60% of Soviet economy, in Soviet Union all nations were equalized in their right. Violations against Eastern European nations happened under rule of Stalin, and Stalin was a Georgian, not Russian, and also Stalin commited many crimes against Russian population. Soviet elites and govenment also consisted of all nations that were inside USSR, not only Russians. Russian politician Boris Yeltsin in late 80s was against rule of communist party, and with huge support of Russian population Boris Yelstin made Russia an autonomic republic inside USSR in 1990, and later Yeltsin defeated a Stalinist coup attempt in Mosow and banned communist party in territory of USSR. Later Boris Yeltsin signed an agreements with Belarus and Ukraine, according to which Russia, Belarus and Ukraine left USSR. Russia is not Soviet Union, Russia was just one of 15 republics inside USSR and Russia don't have any responsibility for crimes of communist party, especially when Russians themeselves suffered a lot and Stalin was a Georgian

@sampohonkala4195 "Donbass cannot legally join Russia; borders of countries can only be legally changed by an agreement of the government of that country, and Ukraine has not made such an agreement" (c)
This is your quote. In 2014 an illegal coup have happened in Kiev, with support of United States and American special services. If people in Kiev had right to self-determination, so Russian people in Crimea (60% of Crimean population were Russians even before the annexation) and Donbass (~50% of population were Russians). Russian people in Crimea and Donbass have the same right to self-determination as Ukrainians in Kiev. In 2014 an ILLEGAL anti-constitutional coup happened in Kiev with support of CIA, when Victoria Nuland, head of US state department was in Kiev during the protests.
After the illegal coup Ukraine had NO MORAL RIGHT to prevent ethnical Russian regions to separate from Ukraine, especially considering the fact that there were a far-right neo nazi groups during the coup in Kiev such as "Right Sector" and the person known as Yarosh. And this Ukrainian nazis insulted Russian population of south-eastern Ukraine during the illegal coup in Kiev since december 2013, so, of course Russians from Crimea and Donbass have chosen to separate from Ukraine, and after illegal coup have happened in Kiev, they have the same right of self-determination to do this as people in Kiev, but what Ukraine did to them? Kievan authorities, who came to power as a result of illegal coup, hypocritically blamed Russian separatists in terrorism because of them capturing state building and proclaiming independence of Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics, and after that Kievan authorities moved tanks and forces into Donbass. Ukraine started this war, not Russia. Ukraine in 2014 started the civil war inside its territory against Russian population.
Russia had no other choise but to intervene and help Russian separatists with Russian special services, weapons and stream of volunteers from Russia, so Ukrainian army was unable to defeat the separatists in 2014-15. Russian special sevices helped Russian separatists just like American special services helped Ukrainian protesters with their illegal coup in Kiev earlier. Later Russia organized peace talks between Ukraine and Donbass, Minsk agreements, and ethnical conflict was frozen. But Ukrainian government still was considering this territories as part of their state, and Ukraine wanted thus territories back, but in order to achieve this Ukraine needed to cut off Russian supplues to DPR and LPR. Ir order to cut off Russian supplies to separatists, Ukraine needed to join NATO. So Russia, fearing a war with NATO would be unable to help Russian separatists in Donbass, and Ukrainian army could have chance to invade Donbass and capture Donetsk and Luhansk. So, here we see that Russia had no other option but to invade Ukraine. If Russia didn't invaded Ukraine, Ukraine could have invaded Donbass region after gaining military alliance with United States. Russia was trying to solve this problem by negotiations, in 2021 there were negotiations between Russia and NATO in Jeneva. But peaceful negotiations failed, so Russia had no other option.
