Russia attacked Ukraine because Ukraine wanted to join NATO, and Russia believes that NATO poses a danger to it. Russia has the right to consider NATO a threat and to be concerned about this threat - the same Americans in 1962, when the USSR placed missiles in Cuba, were also scared, so much so that sanctions are still being imposed against Cuba for no clear reason. And there was also a military operation of American troops in the Bay of Pigs. In 2003, America invaded Iraq because the Americans were afraid that Iraq might develop nuclear weapons. In 2000, the Americans deployed nuclear weapons in Poland and Romania. The German Foreign Minister assured Gorbachev in 1989 that there would be no expansion of NATO. And in 1997 and 2004 it happened. Ukraine and Georgia are certainly independent states. But you cannot ensure your own safety by sacrificing the safety of your neighbor. The USSR collapsed in 1991. And NATO existed in 2007 - 16 years after the collapse of the USSR. In 2007, Russia had not yet attacked Georgia. In 2007, Russia had not yet annexed Crimea or invaded Ukraine. So why did NATO exist in 2007? Why did the Americans place nuclear weapons in Poland? Russia would never have attacked Ukraine if Ukraine had not tried to join NATO. Ukrainian society has historically been located in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Austria, and therefore Ukrainians as a nation have grown freedom-loving. Ukrainian society has always, since the 19th century, been split into Westerners who wanted Ukraine's integration into Europe, and Slavophiles. In 2014, a liberal revolution took place in Ukraine, the pro-Russian government was overthrown, and liberals came to power who wanted Ukraine to join NATO. That's why the war started, because Russia considers NATO a threat to its borders. Russia had very good relations with Ukraine until 2014, and Russia would never have attacked Ukraine if it had not tried to join NATO. Ukrainian politicians are no less to blame than Putin

@thornelderfin Crimea wasn't part of Kievan Rus - it was controlled by nomads from Asia, so called Pechenegs, later Crimean Tatars. Kievan Rus conquerred and captured only small part of Crimea in the 10th century - the city of Kherch.
Kievan Rus is an ancestor of both Ukraine, Russia and Belarus. Moscow didn't existed when Kiev was a capital of Rus, but Moscow was built in the 13th century on the land of Vladimir-Suzdal principality, that was part of Kievan Rus.
Also, Kiev became the capital of Rus after the unification of Rus in 882. The unification of Rus happened after the Novgorod principality (territory of modern Russia) conqueerred Kiev in 882. Later the prince of Novgorod betrayed his nobles and proclaimed himself the prince of Kiev. And later Kiev principality captured the Novgorod. Only after this Kiev became capital. Russian city of Novgorod is older than Ukrainian city of Kiev. So, Russia have the same right to be a successor of Kievan Rus, as Ukraine. And if we would count Russia as an successor of Kievan Rus, Russia have rights to all Belorussian and Ukrainian territories, according to your logic about Crimea (You said that Crimea must be Ukrainian because it was a part of Kievan Rus, but why do you think that Ukraine is successor of Kievan Rus?)

There was a war between Moldova and Transinistria in the 90s, but Ukrainian and Russian armies condicted a joint peacekeeping operation in 1993 in Russo-Ukrainian populated region of Moldova. The war was frosen, but OF COURSE Moldovan government consider this territory as its own despite the democratic will of the people who want to be independent from them. And I think Moldova wants to conduct something simillar to what Ukraine was trying to do - Ukraine knew that Russia is helping the separatists in the Donbass, and Ukraine wanted to join NATO or at least receive some defense guarantees from United States, in order to cut off Russian supplies to rebels in case of Ukrainian offensive on Donetsk and Luhansk. Russia knew this, and in 2021 there were negotiations between Russia and NATO, but negotiations failed, and Russia was forced by the United States to invade Ukraine, because Russia had no other options. Russia was trying to force Ukraine to negotiations, and in march 2022 there were negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Istambul, Turkey. Russia wanted just neutral status of Ukraine and non-joining NATO, and Russia was even ready to give Ukraine all territory back, on the line of february 23rd 2022. Russia made a signature on this document, while Ukraine proposed Russia to "give a signal, that you are ready to respect the accords", and Russia withdrew its forces from Kyiv and Northern Ukraine in start of april 2022. But after Russia did this, Western leaders promised military and economical help to Ukraine, and Boris Johnson promised that Ukraine would take Crimea, so after Russian withdrawal from Northern Ukraine, which was a signal that Russia is ready to respect Istambul peace accords, Ukraine forgot about peace accords and negotiations, and later Russia made the annexations of 4 Ukrainian regions in order to mark that there would be no other chance for Ukraine to negotiate again.
There we can clearly see, that Ukraine wanted to invade Russian separatists regions in the Donbass, but in order to achieve this Ukraine wanted to cut off Russian supplies to rebels by receiving defense guarantees from NATO or United States. What is interesting is that all countries of NATO consider Crimea as a Ukrainian territory, so even if Ukraine could have started an offensive war against Russian separatists and Crimea, NATO countries still could be forced to join the war by 5th NATO article. So Russia had no other choise but to force Ukraine to negotiations with using its army as a threat near Kyiv in march 2022, after negotiations between NATO and Russia failed in 2021.
The same could happen with separatist region of Transinistria, but at now Russia is unable to help them with their defense against Moldovan army.

@pjhgerlach And what's the point of blowing up the gas pipeline when you could just break the contract for the supply of gas? And what was the point of Russia stopping trade with Germany altogether, if for Russia gas exports are very profitable, form a significant share of state budget revenues, and Germany bought gas the most and at high prices? What was the point of Russia shooting itself in the foot and cutting back on its own export earnings? Are you saying this is blackmail? Russia, by the way, from the very beginning of the sanctions, advocated free trade without restrictions for everyone with everyone, and Russia wanted and wants to trade with the West. If Russia ever has the opportunity to trade with the West, Russia will take advantage of this opportunity. And the Americans blew up Nord Stream so as not to leave Europe a choice, so that Europe would simply be forced to buy American gas, which is much more expensive and worse than Russian. This is the US blackmailing Europe instead of the fair competition and free trade that Russia stands for.

Putin does not need to seize Ukraine in order for there to be a change of political power to one that will suit the Kremlin. Look at Georgia - when the war was going on in August 2008, the Western media called Saakashvili a hero, just like Zelensky is now. And when the war ended with Russia's victory, the European Union Commission recognized Georgia as the culprit of the war because of the conflict with the rebels from South Ossetia. And Saakashvili, who signed the peace and surrendered the territories to Russia, and also tried to use the war to strengthen his personal power, fell in the eyes of the Georgians. Zelensky, by the way, is also now strengthening his power, taking advantage of the war. After Saakashvili, neutral politicians came to power in Georgia. They provided Georgia with stagnation in the economy, freezing of reforms, NOT joining the European Union and NATO. And they also do business with Putin.

Another blatant lie from the Western media - the main World supplier of grain is Russia, not Ukraine. And the cause of a possible World famine is hypocritical and unfair Western sanctions - when America and other Western countries bombed Iraq, Libya and Serbia, no one imposed sanctions against them. But in 2022, when Russia began conducting a military operation in Ukraine according to the American Kosovo scenario, the West hypocritically imposed sanctions, because of which Russia, being the world's main supplier of grain, was unable to sell it. Through the fault of the West, the world was on the verge of starvation. However, in July 2022, Russia concluded a grain deal, the meaning of which was that Russia would be able to sell grain in exchange for Ukraine getting the same opportunity. Russian troops left Snake Island, and the Russian fleet stopped blocking Ukrainian ports. However, one of the conditions of the deal was that a significant part of the Ukrainian grain was to go to poor African countries, and Ukraine did not fulfill this condition, although Russia extended the deal several times in the hope that the "Kiev partners", as Putin likes to say, would fulfill the terms of the deal they signed. Then Russia withdrew from the deal, and now the lying Western media hypocritically and falsely blame Russia for the famine, although Ukraine did not fulfill its part of the deal to supply grain to poor countries, and Russia is going to give them its grain for free.

@Chillerll if NATO isn't threat, why this alliance was existing in 2007, and why they placed nukes in Poland? NATO probably wouldn't invade Russia, but they would use their strategicall location to supress and command Russia in questions of politics and economic deals. Russia would be in the trap like China in 19th century - British army controlled Chinese sea ports and controlled Chinese trade, resulting the collapse of China as empire and colonization of China by foreign powers in 19-20th centuries. Russia even before the war economically was placed in non-equal position - a lot of Russian productions are the property of foreigners, economically Russia is a cake, full of oil, gaz, food and resources. But this resources Russia is trading aboard for low prices. Russia is a World leader in wheat production, one of the leaders in oil and gaz exports. German production of meds is dependent on Russian resources. Russian export of chemicats are playing big role in the World computer production. Russia, after the collapse of USSR faced herself in the global economic system as a supplying colony of more developed countries. Just like India in 18-20th centuries - India was supplying the British Empire by all resources, while the country was poor. Russia faced herself in a familliar situation - Russian economy is dependent on foreigner imports and tech, productions are controlled by foreigners, Russia is exporting and poor country, that provides the developed World by all resources. And this war with Ukraine would isolate Russia from Western World. Putin wanted this sanctions, this is why he invaded Ukraine. Russia don't wants to repeat the history of Asian countries, that were colonized economically by non-equal deals without a shot

This is a complete failure. Maybe not military, but a failure. Let's remember why Russia started the war with Ukraine back in 2014 - Russia started the war to prevent NATO from expanding to the East. Putin has said and says that Russia is afraid of NATO expansion. However, let's think, is NATO a threat to Russia, which has nuclear weapons? The question is rhetorical - no. The democratic powers of the West will never go to war without a good reason, especially a war against a country with nuclear weapons that will incinerate them, which Russia is capable of doing. So, there is no military threat to NATO. It means that Russia is not concerned about security in the issue of NATO expansion, but about spheres of influence - in 2013-14, a democratic revolution took place in Ukraine, the corrupt President Yanukovych was overthrown, and since then Ukraine has been striving for democracy, wanted to join NATO and the EU, i.e. Russia risked losing its zone of economic and political influence. That is why in 2014 Russia made the first attempt to invade and seize Ukraine - when Russian special services and the military seized administrative buildings in the Eastern regions of Ukraine inhabited by Russians, after which the Crimean, Donetsk and Lugansk Republics were proclaimed. In Crimea, the Ukrainian military, who did not want to fight with the Slavic brothers, agreed with the Russians and evacuated, after which Crimea entered Russia, but they did not negotiate in the Donbas and the war began, which was waged by Russia and the rebels, although support for the idea of separation from Ukraine in the regions of Eastern Ukraine was and is actually low. I am Russian, and I myself remember how in 2014 they told us on TV that the rebels would now seize Kiev and "liberate Ukraine", they told us on TV about the downed Ukrainian military aircraft, which, as it turned out later, actually turned out to be a Maylazian Boeing that was flying to the Netherlands. I remember 2015, when Boris Nemtsov, an oppositionist who opposed the war, was killed by an automatic burst right in the center of Moscow, the Russian opposition died with him. Putin, who had completely lost his popularity by 2012, raised his rating as a result of the annexation of Crimea, it was such a "small victorious war". If in 2011 Putin's rating was 28%, then in 2015 it was more than 60%.
Russia does not want to allow the spread of the zone of influence of the West to its borders, and at the same time Russia is trying to maintain its zone of influence, but the military threat that Putin is talking about does not come from the West. That is, Russia wants to remain an independent country and not allow itself into the zone of influence of the West. However, here the Russian leadership makes a fatal mistake - due to the fact that Russia resists the growth of the zone of influence of the West, Russia receives sanctions and restrictions, Russia is isolated from the World economy, despite the fact that Russia does not really produce anything except resources, the buyer of which still needs to be found, and depends on imports. And Russia, receiving sanctions from the West, is isolated, and Putin is forced to flee to China to bow. I.e. if Russia is not a zone of influence of the West, Russia will simply become a colony of China, and this is even worse. Back in 2014, China took advantage of Russia's position. In 2015, Russia laid an insanely expensive gas pipeline to China, and the Chinese bought gas from us much cheaper than the world average prices. The Chinese buy oil from Russia much cheaper than the world average prices. The Chinese cut down forests cheaply in Russia, produce building materials at home, and sell the lowest quality boards made of sawdust to Russia. Relations between Russia and China are absolutely unequal, China regards Russia not as an equal partner, but as a colony, a resource appendage. China is simply taking advantage of the position of Russia, which quarrels with the whole world. It is foolish to think that China is an ally of Russia. The Chinese have always been duplicitous, cunning and expectant, and they have always stuck a knife in the back of the Russians, as it was in the 1950s, when China broke off all relations with the USSR, and this after Soviet soldiers liberated them from the Japanese, the USSR provided the communist army in their civil war, and Soviet scientists gave they need a nuclear bomb. The problem is that no one will come to the aid of Russia, isolated because of this war, if the Chinese want to cross the border. This is a complete failure of Russia's foreign policy. Russia will lose its economy due to sanctions, our standard of living will soon be lower than in Brazil. And the war itself is taking place between fraternal peoples who have kinship ties. And it will not be possible to occupy Ukraine - they will want independence. We'll just get a territory populated by partisans who hate us. This is a disaster, Russia lost the war before it started. Even in the first second of the war, Russia had already lost it, when no one had died yet.

@aldeno8055 NATO carried out a peacekeeping operation in Yugoslavia. There, radioactive munitions were used for bombing, and the Chinese embassy was also destroyed. Or like the war in Iraq. I don’t understand the hypocrisy of the West at all - America can bomb anyone, and the whole world will believe that this is legal. But when Russia attacks someone, then Russia needs to be isolated. Do not allow Russian athletes to compete. And how the DW audience rejoices at the news that Russia will leave the ISS. After the collapse of the USSR, only one superpower remained in the World, one World giant, which economically, militarily and politically rules the entire World - the United States. In the 2000s, Russia tried to join the EU and NATO, but we were not accepted. In 2007, there were even negotiations on a visa-free regime with the EU, but they failed. Back in 2007, Putin said in his Munich speech that the expansion of NATO to the borders of Russia does not suit us, that this creates threats. Russia is forced to follow the path of confrontation with the West. This means that the pro-Western foreign policy of Ukraine cannot suit us.

@Scott Johnston the war in Georgia differs from the war in Ukraine only in scale - the population of Georgia is 3 million people, and the population of Ukraine is 40 million. Therefore, Russia defeated little Georgia in 5 days, the West did not particularly react to this - there were cosmetic ridiculous sanctions against specific individuals in the Kremlin. Russia for 5 days of the war lost about 300 soldiers killed, Georgia about the same. And in Ukraine, a massacre has been going on for the 6th month, and tough sanctions are being introduced. But in fact, everything was the same there - Putin spoke about the expansion of NATO and "a threat to Russia." There were also rebels in Georgia - Abkhazia and South Ossetia, an analogue of the DPR and LPR. Georgia, like Ukraine, was pumped up with NATO weapons - stingers, javelins, American rifles.

As a Russian I would say that in 24 years there was no one who could compete with Putin. In late 90s Russian economy was in bad shape, and both communists and liberals didn't had any approval or trust from Russian people. Russian people hated communists after 70 years of socialism, and Russians didn't wanted communism back. But also Russians hated liberals after economic collapse of 90s. So, in late 90s there was a political vacuum in Russia, and people didn't knew for who vote. And after 90s there was a demand in society for strong state. And so this is how Putin was elected in 2000, he was a Russian security services chief, and Russian police and security services came to power in country with him with strong demand of society.
In 1993 in Russia there was a conflict between communists and liberals for the Constitution of new Russia. Communists wanted the old Soviet Constitution to stay, while liberals wanted to make a new constitution for new non-communist state. Boris Yeltsin ended this conflict by shooting parlament with communists from tank cannons, so Yeltsin and liberals won. So, historically, even 7 years before Putin came to power, Russia became a state where parlament was afraid of president will and in Russian liberal Constitution president received huge abilities, 7 years before Putin came to power. In Russian Constitution of 1993 president was a person who decides the politics of state and rules the parlament. So, in order to determine and change the politics of whole country, you need 20-30 years. 20-30 years in historical perspective is nothing. So, according to Russian Constitution of 1993 president is leading and determining the way of policy, and he must stay in power for 20-30 years in order to achieve this.
