@selmahare The territories that Peter took from Sweden at the beginning of the 18th century, at the beginning of the 17th century, were taken by Sweden from Russia during one of the Russo-Swedish wars. But this does not change the essence of the Kremlin - Putin alone does not decide anything, Putin's power depends on a certain group of people. It is stupid to think that Russia is ruled by some dictator who is in general the only one who controls everything and does not depend on anyone. It is foolish to think that Russia's goal is to seize territories. In the 21st century, it is no longer necessary to seize territory. Zelensky just wanted Ukraine to join NATO and the EU, and Russia is not satisfied with this, for Russia it is an existential threat

In any case, the dictator focuses on the support of the elites. That is why all authoritarian countries are corrupt. Officials steal money with the permission of the tsar in return for the fact that they will abandon the conspiracy. Honest people who want the good of their country will simply not get into such an apparatus. However, officials need bank accounts where they will put money, and they also need at least some kind of economy from which they would collect taxes. Corruption scares business away, and therefore the state is trying to rectify the situation by bribing business and linking it with itself - the state allows business to illegally enrich itself at its own expense, and this forces business not to flee from a corrupt state, where all other market players have pretty bad conditions. Putin, betraying the interests of business and officials, puts himself in danger.

The Kremlin managed to find a common language with Poroshenko, to bribe him to freeze the conflict. However, Zelensky could not be bribed, and Zelensky decided to just dance to the American tune, Zelensky wanted Ukraine to join NATO and the EU, and for Russia this is a key issue. However, in December 2013 - February 2014, a coup d'etat took place in Ukraine, pro-Russian President Yanukovych was overthrown, and revolutionaries came to power - pro-Western puppets who were anti-Russian.
