Putin is trying to say that Russia had invaded Ukraine, because Ukraine wanted to join NATO, and NATO is threating Russia. NATO isn't threating Russia - both sides have nukes. If the war between Russia and NATO would start, this would be the shortest war in history, and both NATO and Russia's armies wouldn't have any opportunities to use their positions, such as a cotrolled by someone Ukraine...
Russia don't need expansion, and Russia isn't targeting the expansion, because if Russia wanted the expansion - in 2008 Russians had an opportunity to conquer Georgia, but Russians didn't fully occupied Georgia in 2008. This is the evidence that Russia isn't trying to expand and the goal of war isn't the expansion.
Russia had invaded Ukraine, because :
Putin is caring of his popularity, because he is a dictator, he need to hold his position in power, and Putin is trying to make the dreams of some parts of Russian people into the reality.
1) Huge amount of Russians, especially elderly generation, that was living in Soviet Union, aren't seeing the Ukrainian people as people, they see Russians and Ukrainians as one people and elderly generation of Russians want USSR back.
2) Ukrainian army was fighting against Russian separatist regions in the Donbass, and this factor made some parts of Russian population feel angry towards Ukrainians ( I live in Russia and I know what people, that are surrounding me, are thinking). 30-40% of Russians are suppourting war and Putin, because for 8 years since 2014 Ukrainian military was killing Russian separatists in the Donbass region - unrecognized DPR and LPR governments. And Russians are counting this war as a "Crusade against Ukrainian nationalistic government, that was killing Russian rebels for 8 years". And this is particially true - Ukrainian government and governmental ideology is really nationalistic and anti-Russian in terms of history books and monuments. For example Ukrainian nationalistic batalions have nazi symbolics, in the Ukrainian city of Lviv there are the monument of division SS Galichina - Ukrainian WW2 colaborators, that were serving to Hitler. There are a monument of Ukrainian WW2 colaborators in the city of Lviv. Western Ukraine always was nationalistic, and even in Soviet times Russian-speaking person in Lviv was in danger during the night. In 2018 Ukrainian government had provided the language reform - Russian language was banned in schools, governmental buildings, TV and hospitals. In many Ukrainian cities there are the monuments of Stephan Bandera, Ukrainian WW2 nationalist and leader of Ukrainian Rebel Army. And this monuments are making some Russians misunderstood and angry towards Ukrainians, because Ukrainians have monuments of WW2 nazis in theis cities. And of course Putin't propaganda for 8 years was playing on this, hyperbolizing Ukrainian rusophobia. I live in Russia, and in last 3 years we don't had news about Russia. All governmental media is talking about the Ukraine and West.
3) I don't think that this war really have economical reasons, because Russia suffered economic losses from sanctions and isolation. But actions, that Russian government had provided in 2014 had economical reasons. Ukraine wanted to join European Union, and Russian economical elites don't tolerate such move. If Ukraine had entered the European Union, Russian economic elites would lose Ukrainian market, and Ukraine would become more richer country, and such dictator as Putin don't need democratic and more developed country near his borders. And also Europe would use American nukes in Ukraine as an instrument in question of Russo-European gas trade - gas pepelines are located on the Ukrainian territory. But at now this doesn't matter, because Europe would reject gas trade with Russia in 6-8 years, so economy isn't the reason of war. Putin simply need to hold his power, and he need to make something to his Russian servants, and he invaded Ukraine, because some Russians, especially older generation, want the collapse of Ukraine, and this war would provide the popularity and suppourt to Putin. And Putin isn't caring about economy, he isn't caring about the casualities. This is just like an American film - "Johny got his gun" (1971). The old people, that would die soon, sent joung to death and ruined the future of country. Russian people would lose half of their life standarts for imperial happiness of demential old people, that would vote for "United Russia" and Putin in elections.
NATO, as a nuclear operator, isn't threating the Russian security, and Russia, as a nuclear operator too, also isn't threating the NATO security. Putin is liar, and he is lying when he is talking about NATO expansion to the East. The reasons of war are political - Putin simply want to hold power no matter by which cost. But "security of Russia", as Putin says, isn't the reason of war.
