  1. It's not the water vapor which breaks down the plastic but rather a bacteria which feeds on the plastic and breaks it down into toxic VOC gasses which requires the water vapor to thrive. This was proven to be the cause of at least some cases of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. I would have passed out if I hadn't opened up the side of the mask to allow some air to enter the mask as I inhaled.
