  1. Are not indiscriminate Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure escalation of the worst kind? Apparently they are in most cases outright war crimes - and some Western leaders are STILL worrying about taking part in escalating the war! Olaf the Waffle is the worst, likely because of covert Russian ties, but what about the others? I suspect history will not treat them or their legacy kindly. We can solidly write off two NATO member states as Putin-Russia wannabes (Orban's Hungary and Erdogan's Turkey), to be dealt with later, but Olaf's Germany is a bit of a puzzle.

  2. Brian May (Queen guitarist) has a PhD in Astrophysics, Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean, among other characters) is an electrical engineer. Intelligent and multi-talented people pop up everywhere. It comes as no surprise that Zelenskyy is one of those incredibly intelligent, astute and multi-talented individuals. Literally an accidental President initially, his big challenge was the massive Soviet & Russian-era corruption Ukraine was dealing with, soon replaced with Putin's invasion and Ukraine's determined fight for it's very existence. Zelenskyy is currently earning his place beside historical greats like FDR and Churchill, while Putin is placing himself beside the historical dregs of humanity like Hitler, Mussolini and Pinochet. What Zelenskyy's final legacy actually ends up being remains to be seen, but the prospects are not bad.

  4. I am deeply offended - not by you, Artur, but by the feckless right-wing 'Muricans that are trying to dismantle the NATO alliance on behalf of Putin. I would not be at all surprised if this blew up in the Repugnican's faces with solid evidence emerging of their direct collusion with Putin's Russia. What would follow would be a genuine manhunt for politicians that have betrayed the 'Murican nation and all they have tries to stand for.

The states formerly under the heel of Russia really KNOW what it was like, and they are taking no chances: They are preparing for the war they KNOW will be coming if Russia is given a millimeter in the Ukrainian invasion. They also know that Russia has to be crushed NOW to avoid an all-out WW3! No illusions, no economic excuses. Ukraine is fighting for all Western democracies, and THE LEAST we can do is to provide all the tools they need to crush the Russians. Quibbling about supplying modern air power to them is just as stupid and ignorant as quibbling about supplying modern tanks used to be. The "tank dam" has already broken, lets skip the stupidity of building an "air power dam" that will eventually break, anyway. I certainly hope that forward-thinking people have ensured that experienced Ukrainians have already been trained on whatever modern equipment they might potentially receive, to ensure that Ukrainians will be up and running the moment the stupid political dams break.

Ordinary people in the West should take any "news" from Ukrainian and other western source with a shovelful of salt (and respect their need for secrecy) - and totally discount ANYTHING coming from Russian sources, the "harbingers of truth". This is, after all, WAR - and the first casualty is always the truth. We will learn the actual truth in a decade or two, when the historians have sorted through the rubble. Until then we can only cross our fingers and toes, hoping for a quick and decisive Ukrainian victory AND continue to support Ukraine with all our might. If not, the rest of Europe will suffer the fate of Ukraine in a decade or two. Russia, in it's current incarnation, is a blight on humanity!

  7. Polish politics may be on the verge of going the way of Hungary and Turkey, but the Polish nation is another matter entirely. There is no doubting Polish courage and ferocity when push comes to shove, the story of Polish nationals that escaped west and fought with allied forces in WW2 is legendary. I live in a tiny little Nordic country (Iceland), where Polish nationals are the largest "immigrant" group and they have been a welcome addition to our society. The Baltic states (as well as all the other states that lived under the USSR) seem equally determined to NEVER have a Russian boot on their neck again. Hungary is the current exception that will hopefully resolve itself, with either a "HungExit" or a deposed Orban. It WILL be either-or, and it is up op the Hungarian nation to decide which it will be, not Putin-wannabe Orban.

  8. I keep thinking that the western nations have been mostly at peace (at least within Europe) since the collapse of the Soviet Union. One consequence has been the emerging dream of increasingly using tax money for more practical things that military hardware, stuff we use to kill each other. For a good while, things were actually looking good! Then along came bloody Putin and the bleedin' Russians, and shattered the dream. We are now destined to put a lot of our efforts into "making swords, not plowshares", to use an old metaphor, for at least a couple of generations to come. Instead of using our resources to create stuff for everyone's good, the next two generations will have to create stuff to kill Russians and intimidate the Chinese and the Persians. The festering wannabe-authoritarian blisters that are Belarus, Hungary and Turkey will fall apart by themselves - unless Putin wins! The former Soviet "colonies" like the Baltic states, Poland and Czechia/Slovakia etc. are the states that have been most conscious of the Russian threat - and are the most realistic states, best mentally prepared for the final showdown that seems to be inevitable. The least realistic nation at the moment seems to be Germany, with Olaf "the waffle" Scholtz at the helm. Ukraine is fighting it's heart out, doing all the bleeding while defending what remains of Western democracy. The Western nations have mostly been doing the bare minimum to to keep Ukraine from losing, and are failing in doing what will help Ukraine to actually WIN in short order! Make no mistake: If Putin is not defeated NOW, he will regroup, purge and modernize his military, and we will have to fight a bloody war with a much stronger Russia in less than a decade.

  9. It is a relief to see Olaf the Waffle Scholz finally face reality and un-waffle himself. In Putin's Russia, Europe and other democratic nations are facing an imminent autocratic threat that will not go away unless like-minded nations unite to neutralize it as permanently as possible. If Putin succeeds even slightly in Ukraine, he will be back for more within a decade - and so will China! Now is the time to form a line in concrete: You can cooperate and prosper working WITH developed nations or you can isolate yourself and suffer trying to subjugate other developed nations. What has remained hush-hush is the very important air superiority aspect: Russia has been unable to claim it and we can be assured that NATO has been making ready to participate in full if/when THAT particular dam breaks. A Russian attack on NATO-member infrastructure, the use of tactical nukes? Given the incompetence of the Russians, they are bound to blunder over one of these lines and THEN the gloves are off! Add to that the incredible motivation of Ukrainians, they are so resourceful and innovative that the Russkis are outmatched.

  10. The truck did not disappear with a flash, the blast seemed to come from below. Another video hints at a boat passing under the bridge at the moment of detonation. My uneducated guess would be a boat bomb, not a truck bomb - not to mention the Russians saying it was a truck bomb, they always get things upside-down.

  11. The Ukrainians are clever buggers. Ignorant as I am in military matters, I am sure the Ukrainians will not bother to engage in costly urban fighting in Bakhmut, they will simply outflank and encircle it and then leave a small contingent of soldiers to wait for the remaining Russians, out of ammo and out of food, to crawl out of the rubble they created, waving white flags of surrender.

  12. It is wonderful to see how clear-eyed the former USSR slave states are about Putin's goals and how they will NOT be taking it lying down. Even the formerly neutral Nordic countries have become clear-eyed about the futility appeasing someone like Putin by staying neutral. Only a united group of nations will be able to stop him. It is a pity that some western leaders like Olaf Scholtz refuse to face the fact that Russia must be stopped NOW, in Ukraine. If not, these same nations will have to face a much stronger Russia in about a decade or so in an all-out WW3. Sadly, WW3 in some form seems inevitable, we had better bite the bullet and deal with Russia NOW, in it's corrupt and weakened state.

  14. I can just imagine the relief felt by non-Russian Estonians (and the other Baltics) when Finland joined NATO - not to mention the vast relief when Sweden was allowed to join as well! There are, however, 2 countries withing NATO that have lost all credibility: Erdogan's Turkey and Orban's Hungary! These 2 countries may have managed to temporarily extort something from their long-term neighbors, but they will be viewed with extreme suspicion and distrust while their current leaders are in power.

  15. The moment when Russia and everything Russian will be kicked out of humane society draws ever closer. In the worst-case scenario, most Russian borders will be closed (including data and goods transport) and Russian vessels, ground, air or maritime, will be intercepted and either confiscated or destroyed. Enough is enough. Putin's Russia WILL eventually try to sabotage the undersea data and power infrastructure between NATO countries - a direct act of war that will eventually prompt at least the hunting down and sinking of the vessels involved. The NATO countries have been timid and reluctant to escalate the conflict, only doing so step-by-step in response to Russian acts of war, but Putin's minions will eventually make a gross miscalculation that will change everything.
