Very important: Jumping momentarily into cold water AFTER you have soaked in a hot spring, and are warm to the bone, is very refreshing indeed - followed by returning to the hot spring to get warm again! Good exercise for your vascular system. The Finns do it in their saunas, we Icelanders do it using our hot tubs... Jumping into cold water without having warm-soaked first is PAINFUL and anyone enjoying it is a bit of a masochist.

I was wondering why the Swiss did not erect a stone wall along the road to protect the road users from clumsy shooters, only find the ingenious solution at the shooter end of the range: Shooting is done through steel tubes that prevents bullets from going dangerously astray. If Switzerland was one of the templates the 'Murican Founding Fathers used when establishing 'Murica, I wondered where and how 'Murica went off the rails while Switzerland has always been as stable as a gyroscope. A car is a device that can be lethal in the wrong hands, so EVERY country strictly regulates them (registration, real in-depth training, licensed users, insurance etc). A gun is a device that can be lethal in the wrong hands, so ALMOST every country strictly regulates them - one notable exception being 'Murica!

I'm Icelandic, born in 1950, and while growing up I only knew one Nazi sympathizer. As far as I know, there WERE many such people, but they had disappeared like cockroaches by the time I was growing up. In a nutshell, WW2 was quietly called "the blessed war", because it yanked Icelanders out of their turf houses and in to the modern world. Iceland benefited a lot from the Marshall Aid (only a tiny part of that aid, we were a tiny nation). Overall, the long-term effects were very beneficial for us. Of course there were all kinds of social problems that caused all kinds of resentments, but fortunately that eventually disappeared in a couple of decades.

I always wonder how the British managed their Industrial revolution using the nonsensical fractional imperial measures. Fact: they actually DID! The Brits (and the 'Muricans) must have specially adapted brains to manage everything from the Industrial Revolution through WW2 in fractions of inches! Fortunately, the 'Muricans solved the space race by enslaving a lot of German Nazis and making them figure out how to go to the moon - all in metric!
